Problems with Maverick ET-732
« Reply #-1 on: April 13, 2013, 04:01:54 PM »
I just ordered and received my Maverick ET-732 BBQ thermometer. I have used it one time and it worked perfect. I
attempted to use it a second time and all I get is " LLL"  for the reading with the Barbecue probe. Has anyone else had this
problem?  :(

I had that happen when I stuck it in a partially frozen turkey. mine worked once it raised above 32 ° F. Take it out and warm it up to see if that works.

If they get wet when cleaning that will mess them up too. Sorry just reread it was the pit probe.

I didn't put it in any meat, it was the probe that hooks to the grill grate. It worked fine the first time I used it now it just gives a "LLL" reading.
The other probe that goes into the meat works fine.

Possible you got water in it?

I do see one every once in a while that just doesn't work out if the box. Maverick is more than good about replacing them.

Thanks, I guess I will contact Maverick's customer service. I ordered it through Amazon, I still hope they cover it.

Amazon has the best service. On their website, put in your return as a defect, and they usually cover return shipping by having you print a prepaid return label.

Try to dry the probes out in the home oven. Obviously, don't stick the part that goes in the thermometer in. They need to be sealed up with some Rtv sealant. I am on another forum and this had come up a lot. You can get it at Walmart or autozone.
I did mine as soon as I got it and never had those problems. This is food grade

To add:  few of us emailed the company about the problem with the probes and they don't seem to want to acknowledge it. I will try to look for a thread from the other forum and post it.
Edit: this could or could not be your problem. Might be bad probes also.

Moisture tends to get up in between the tips and wire. Plenty of folks have dried the probes out in an oven for a few hours then sealed them.

Let us know how this turns out for you Scott.

And - for future reference, we have at least one of our Sponsors that sells the Mavericks. Last I checked...they give us LTBBQ members a nice price too! ;)

I had the same problem about the second time I used my 732. Got new probes and paid attention to what the problem could be. I honestly think it was me! I noticed that where the lid shut on my 1320 and I was passing the probe wire through the door, the probe wire was getting slightly smashed. I wonder if when opening and closing the lid, I let it shut a little too hard a time or two and kinked the wire or somehow lead to the failure. Since, I used a dremel to cut a little slot and I make sure the probe wire stays in the slot..have not had another failure. Hope this helps.
Yoder 1320, 3- VUDS's and a couple of Wally World  grills. Working on more all the time.
