Thoughts and prayers needed
« Reply #-1 on: May 27, 2013, 12:58:21 PM »
My wife Lana suffered a stroke at home on Saturday evening as was rushed to UAB hospital here in Birmingham. After several hours in the ER she was taken to the Stroke/Surgical ICU where she is now. They pretty much took 48 hours to stabilize her and run some tests but today the Physical Therapists will evaluate her to see how much damage was done and what might be coming down the road. This morning the DR said the MRI confirmed a stroke but it was not as bad as he had first thought. She has loss of function on the entire left side of her body and some loss of speech. She does not appear to have any damage to her brain or any loss of vision. Not sure yet if she will have to transfer to an inpatient rehab center or can come home for outpatient therapy. I came home for a bath and to pay some bills while some friends sit with her so I probably won't be able to check in much.

Ken, I'm so sorry and I can't begin to imagine how tough this is on both of y'all.  I look forward to meeting here one of these days.  Until then you'll be in my prayers.  Dee

Stroke

Stroke-Time Lost is Brain Lost

Stroke is the leading cause of disability and the third leading cause of death in the United States. An estimated 700,000 to 750,000 new or recurrent strokes occur each year in the United States.

In 2004 New York State had 6,855 deaths due to stroke.

Learning the signs of stroke and calling 911 for help are the best ways to prevent disability and death from stroke.

Time Lost is Brain Lost

Stroke Signs

All of the major symptoms of stroke appear suddenly, and without warning and they are often not painful but still need to be taken seriously. If you think someone is experiencing any of these symptoms, or you are experiencing them call 9-1-1 immediately.

The most common symptoms of stroke can be remembered by the acronym FAST:

F = Face: Is one side of the face drooping down?
A = Arm: Can the person raise both arms, or is one arm weak?
S = Speech: Is speech slurred or confusing?
T = Time: Time is critical!! Call 9-1-1 immediately!
Other, less common symptoms of the most common type of stroke are:

sudden trouble seeing,
sudden dizziness, and
generalized weakness.
If you or someone you are with have any one of these symptoms, it's important to act FAST and call 911, as soon as possible!

My sincere hopes for a speedy recovery for your wife.

I had a stroke at age 59. It has been eleven years and with the care that I have been given from the VA, and continued care, I have been 99 per cent for many years. Continue to be hopeful and take one day at time and tell her to never give up. Be forceful and determined. She will win.

With kind regards,

Ed

THoughts and Prayers from us over here too...

LA, great info on strokes.  I can't stress the importance of dialing 911 if you even slightly suspect a stroke.

In addition to the things mentioned, I would suggest checking facial symmetry by having the person smile. We are finding that an uneven smile shows signs of a stroke before most other basic tests.
