I know that many will find this a hard to belive answer....

But - it is the $20 one from Taylor. I like it better than a Thermapen...Why? Reads faster -and as accurate in a side by side comparison. The backlit screen faces UP - so it does not matter if you are holding it in your right - or left hand. It is splash proof, and has a number of functions not on the Thermapen.

AND-...it's $20 bucks.... ;D

I assume you are asking about Instant Read probes?

I've got an older Thermapen, and one of these $19 puppies...   A group of us went in and got the $15 special.

Only takes a couple seconds longer to read, but it works great.   I use it in the rain.

Lurch I have been the gambit with the  leave in place kind....And - Unfortunately ( for the wallet ;) ) the best one - and the most dependable for the long term has been the Maverick 732. I have owned maybe 20 different brands and varied models thru the years - but, none that have held up as well or been as reliable as the Mav 732. About $60 bucks..And you can buy 6 ft. probe leads.

Ditto on the 732.   I've had 3 generations of Mavericks, and it is the best.   Go for the 6' probes like T said.

I've heard such nightmare stories on probes failing in many units making them expensive to keep & operate. So far our Maverick 732 has been rock solid.  We love ours.

Other than that I have a couple $13 cheapies from Wal-Mart. No remote or anything fancy, but have been fool-proof for almost 3 years now and still have the original probes.
