My dad would walk down the hallway to my brother's and I room. As walked down he would snap the belt together letting us know he was coming. Close the door behind him and then started swinging ???

IMHO he seemed to really enjoy it. He was abusive and went too far. I agree with spanking your kids but he went further then that. We were literally afraid of him.

I really try to balance that out with my kids now. I use my hand through the clothing. Not super hard but it stings and they get the message.

I use my hand through the clothing. Not super hard but it stings and they get the message.

The belt is excessive.  I believe that a good swat will suffice.  Pain isn't required.  When they're toddlers or younger the strike's noise is effective.  The ratio of loving touches to swats has to be a minimum of 100:1, otherwise they'll fear your hand.

I've never trained a dog with pain, and I certainly wouldn't subject a child to it.
