How did You Cope with the Cold

Jan 07 2013

I thought I would see posts on how you all did in the storm and cold. Maybe some of you are still digging out. I know some of our northern members and Canadian members think this was pretty normal weather! For me it is the coldest I remember here in Ohio. It was the coldest last night, Monday. We had -12 deg. -39 chill factor, 20 mph winds 30 mph gusts.

This was the third major storm for the winter and we came out better than expected in all three. The front got here Sunday about noon and after an hour of snow it turned to rain and then slushy rain that lasted about 8 hours. We were right in the divide between the rain and snow and it stayed just above freezing for the 8 hours before getting into the snow.

My daughter from NE Indiana called at 3 pm Sunday and they had 10 inches already. We woke up Monday with only about 3 more inches of snow; it had drifted from the wind.

Our son was in S.C. and the dil wanted to try and make it to work Monday. She dropped the grandson off at 7 am and left for Lima normally a 20 minute drive. She was supposed to call when she got there; an hour later I called her. She said she was sitting on I75 behind an accident. She finally made it to work at 9:40!

I bundled up and blew about 6 inches of snow from my drive and front walk. I did it in two trips out it was a bitter cold. The dil made it home OK and our son made it home from S.C. at 2 am. He was lucky to get the flight to Dayton, OH. He said I75 was good and drove the speed limit until 5 miles from home ran into black ice. I was glad all were home OK.

It was -11 this morning but made it up to 8 deg. this afternoon; still a bitter cold. I only made it out once for about 10 minutes to shovel some snow that had drifted in on the drive and front walk. Looks like the cold front is moving east, it was 8 deg. early evening, 10 deg. at midnight and now at 3 am it is 12 deg. It is supposed to get above 20 today.

It is forecast to be 40 on Friday and in the 40’s for the first part of next week. This is some crazy weather! I hope all makes it through the cold without too many problems!

We had 10 inches in St. Louis, then the temp dropped to below 0 for 2 days.  It is better now, up to almost 30 today.  My brother and his kids were stuck at my house, just for a extra night.  We grilled some chicken legs and drank beer.  The kids just played, it was nice.

Only snow flurries here but got down to 8 degrees, lowest temps in 20 years in Alabama. We were some the lucky ones who did not lose power and one whole town lost natural gas and their heat during the coldest weather. We cranked up our gas logs in the fireplace and turned up the furnace a degree or two and only went outside to fill up the bird feeder and go the store for more beer. We have been 60+ hours below freezing which in unheard of down here. I am just glad Al Gore invented global warming because when I was a kid, we used to have brutal weather like this at least 2 or 3 times a year. Back when I was in my pre-teens I can remember visiting the outhouse in the freezing weather. If you remember the scene in The Christmas Story where the kid stuck his tongue on the flag pole, just imagine sitting down on a ceramic toilet seat at 10 degrees. Of course a the same time we had many weeks at 100 degrees in the summer and now we rarely have more than 4 or 5 days in the summer it gets more than 100 degrees.

This past couple of days was the record breaking cold in FL.

This was outside my office at work the other day. I know it doesn't compare but remember, I live in the sunshine state and I just put in a pool liner.  :D
