Just PM'd the smokers
« Reply #-1 on: March 20, 2014, 03:13:25 PM »
All winter long, I have been thinking about cleaning up the two smokers that I have here in New Braunfels: the Yoder Pellet Smoker and the Yoder Cheyenne Wood Smoker. So, ambitious as I am and now being somewhat modified, I hooked up the pressure washer and gave each one a bath after I used a putty knife to scrape off the loose material. Then I retrieved my peanut oil and re-oiled both smokers. I fired up the pellet smoker to facilitate drying at 350 degrees and let it soak the oil into the metal. I just let the oil dry on the wood smoker since we have a bright sunny day.

What looks like paint pealing and rust goes away immediately as the oil just soaks right in. They almost look brand new at this point inside and out.

I would highly recommend an annual PM program for your smokers as you probably invested some serious dollars in your product and it does not hurt to keep it clean.

Wow they turned out nice. ;D

Yes I am getting ready for a total clean of the MAK. It will be some time before I'm smoking as we have another moderate freeze and snow storm coming :(

I pressure wash inside and out and I oil with peanut oil inside and out. You would be surprised to see so much crud come off of these units even when you think that they are reasonably clean. The oil just soaks right in and it really does not require re-painting with high temperature paint.

I'm a strong advocate of annual "mop and go"... a complete cleaning of all the cookers and smokers...

It's worth the couple of hours of work...

It saves you a lot of problems down the road and is well worth the effort... especially doing the gassers and their burners, hoses, etc...

Been there, done that...

Sounds like the routine I go through with my Harley, get all her chrome nice and shiny and end up riding through a storm.  ;)

Thanks for the post, Ed...

I didn't know I could oil down the outside of the Pecos?  I'll do it today just before I put the pork in to smoke.

I did a pretty thorough cleaning and seasoning in January, but didn't oil down the outside.

Fireboxes on off-sets just don't stay painted very long. Oiling em down is a way better option than constantly re-painting  :)

I just oiled the inside and outside of the Uuni pizza oven with peanut oil myself. It is small enough to take inside when not using but that layer of protection is a plus and it leaves a nice sheen ;)
