New Member from Virginia by way of North Carolina
« Reply #-1 on: May 09, 2016, 10:21:22 PM »
Good evening everyone. I'm a longtime griller looking to move to a pellet grill. I'm leaning towards the Rec Tec RT-680 with smoker box. I grew up with my father and family cooking with custom stick smokers and Webers. I love smoking/grilling meat with friends laughing and enjoying the company of others. I look forward to learning some new tips and trying new things.

Welcome!

As an owner of both the Rec Tec and a MAK 2 Star General....let me recommend that you consider the MAK. It needs no smoker box - and will produce all of the quality smoke you will want. Promise. They make a 1 Star model that i think is one of the best built, and best values on the market.  Not even a screw in it comes from China - if that is important to you. They are all built in Dallas Oregon. Fantastic customer support.

I like my Rec Tec - but the upgradeability of the MAK products is un-matched. See our site sponsor section - they have a tread section if you have specific questions about their products.

Best of luck on whatever decision you make. They all work. It is a matter of measuring the strengths and weaknesses, or features that you desire the most.

Welcome from a South Dakota Heels fan. I know it seems a little weird, but I've loved the 'Heels since Phil Ford was point guard. Maybe dates me a bit I suppose.

If you get back down this way, contact us.  I may be able to get a few of the forum members around here to meet for lunch one day.

Have you eaten at Midwood Smokehouse?  I have been holding a dinner meeting there once a month for the past six months.  I am the alumni advisor for my fraternity at Johnson & Wales University.  I travel to Charlotte weekly.
