I just had to post this part of my trip to Reno, NV to attend the Submarine Veterans Convention. We arrived in Reno on Friday afternoon and spent the next day and a half with three CA cousins on my wife’s side of the family. Sunday was a kind of special day for me. I was finally going to meet “The Rib Master in person. Sparky and his wife, Margaret, drove over to Reno from their home in CA. We exchanged “care packages”. I brought him a nice supply of the sourwood honey I can get locally. Sparky has developed a liking for this honey on his ribs. I also brought a couple of bottles of some new rubs for Sparky that Tee is testing. Sparky and his wife had the bellman bring up a basket of rubs and wine for me and a care package of rubs for Tee.
Sparky and I learned something about our wives that morning. They are both Irish and they think alike. Their likes and dislikes of anything and everything BBQ were identical. They both can tell you how many grills/cookers we each have. I guess they are both paying more attention than we thought. Margaret even said that she asked her husband if he was going to bring me any ribs. He said he didn’t know if we had a refrigerator in our room to store them, so he decided that he wouldn’t take the chance. I told him that I was prepared to tell him to go back to CA if he didn’t have any ribs with him! Everyone laughed at that. We had a nice lunch and continued to chat about a lot of things not-BBQ related. They are exploring the possibility of getting a travel trailer and doing some traveling together, without the kids. I invited the two of them to come spend some time at our house when they come east. I also told him that I would buy the ribs if he would cook them. We will have to have a “Sparky Rib Party” when he shows up. My wife and I so enjoyed the time we spent with Sparky and Margaret. They would be fantastic neighbors.
I am still working on my trip write-up and selecting a few pictures to go along with the travel-log. I will post as soon as I finish.
