Simple Temp Controller For A Charcoal Kettle
« Reply #-1 on: June 17, 2013, 01:14:59 PM »
Looks like it might work good. Built-in spring loaded thermostat to control the temp with a knob like an oven. $30 plus shipping. Anyone ever seen or use one?

I may have to look into getting one of those to test. It looks pretty slick and simple.

Thanks for posting that Mike!

I find that when cooking on my OldSmokey that the lower vents have more to do with adjusting the temperature
(fresh air fuel to the fire)
than the upper vents

the upper vents have more to do with holding smoke over the food
more smokey flavor

same goes for a weber kettle.  heat is controlled by the bottom vents.   8)

Well I hear it works well when using TendaRub. It opens up wide when the flames start.

I have been told that before... Being a trouble maker. Hard to believe right ;)

Seriously though. About this temperature controller. If it closes off the top air vent won't it trap the heat in the kettle and increase temps? I know the bottom vent will mainly affect the temps but wouldn't this help keep the temps dialed in better?

I always leave me top vent wide open.  if you close of the top vent you get icky smoke.

Makes sense but I don't think it would close all the way once up to temp. Maybe it is a better option if just using straight charcoal.
