I just want to check in and say thanks to all who have taken the time to share info here. As a youngin' I grew up grillin over wood then went to gas to accommodate our busy lifestyle. Picked up on Treager pellet smokers years ago but didn't pull the trigger fast enough and Treager moved manufacturing to China so I put pellet grilling/smoking on the back burner.
A friend of mine just pulled the trigger on a Yoder 640 (but he resides 800+ miles away) which has prompted me to once again take a look at USA made cookers. But, unfortunately, I haven't found any retailers close to my home to physically check out the top contenders. The web will be indispensable in my decision making process.
Again, thanks a bunch for taken the time to put your thoughts to paper for us clueless folks looking to get into wood grilling & smoking again.

Welcome, and thanks for the kind words.

Welcome! We are happy you found LTBBQ.
You will notice that we are a friendly bunch - and have no prejudices against any form of outdoor ( and even indoor... ;) ) cooking. Most here have several kinds of cookers - and many of us have pellet grills as well.
Feel free to post any questions you have, and be ready for some great feedback. And - I like near Brevard - so if you would like to see the Rec-Tec and the MAK 2 Star in action, just let me know.

Welcome from Morganton, NC. Where do you live? I have a MAK 2 Star and several other grilling/cooking toys. If you are closer to Morganton than Brevard, PM me and we can get together.

Welcome from Augusta, GA home of the 2014 Fall Gathering in late September.
If you are looking for a great pellet cooker, look at the RecTec who is one of our sponsors and who will kindly provide us with a trailer with four of them on it for us to use at the Gathering.

Welcome to the forum, from NE Ohio.
I can relate to your story. We too were limited with pellet grill/smoker dealers in our area. There's a Traeger dealer about 15 minutes away, and a Memphis & Traeger dealer about an hour away.
And like you, American made was an important factor to us. After researching for about a year we finally pulled the trigger on a MAK and have been nothing but happy ever since.
MAK is also a forum sponsor.

Welcome from Houston. As Dee stated there will be 4 RecTecs at the Gathering in Augusta in 4 weeks, but I bet there will be a couple of other pellet poopers there as well. We have had a Yoder, a MAK, a Traeger, and TentHunteR (Cliff) even brought a pellet attachment for his Weber and demonstrated it. This is the place that you will get to try out a variety of different cooking devices and talk to the people that have a lot of knowledge about all the grills. Go to the Member Gatherings section and read all about it. And, if you find that you like the RecTec, you can pick one up right away because they are located in Augusta.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I think you guys are onto something here! Now to get the time to do all the reading. I'm ready to jump in with both feet but will have to over analyze if history is any indication. Lol

Thanks again for the warm welcome. I appreciate the opportunity to borrow from all the veteran experience here.
Hub - Your efforts putting the Pellet Cookers 101s together was inspirational in my joining here. Great effort on your part to share insight with us FNGs.
BD - We moved to this area, in part, due to the two wheel riding component!!! Best riding east of the Mississippi and many places west!!
Now ... somebody help spend my money?? Lol
