Title: Totally off topic
Post by: TwoPockets on December 06, 2011, 07:09:44 PM
Not related to cooking but I wondered if any of the members are familiar with either the Hickory, NC or Rock Hill, SC areas? Academy Sports is opening up stores in both of those cities next year and I am toying around with the idea of relocating to be closer to my son and his family. Both are a little less than an hour and a half from him. I should be able to jump right into the receiving manager job in either location. Any thoughts?

TP, I know both areas very well. I would pick Hickory any day over Rock Hill. Rock Hill is just becoming a suburb of Charlotte with all the crime. Hickory is a nice small town but growing, great single A baseball team and plenty of things to do. About 45 mins from Charlotte and the same to ski country area around Boone NC

I agree with RonD.  I live in Lincolnton, just twenty minutes south of Hickory.

Hickory is far enough away from Charlotte to not really be a suburb and has a good infrastructure of its own.  It has suffered a bit from the demise of domestic manufacturing (furniture and textiles) but is still alive and kicking.  It has a strong business community and local government understands business needs.  Hickory is close enough to the mountains for skiing in the winter and sightseeing year-round.  Lots of shopping and restaurants -- strong retail segment, still.

I used to live in south Charlotte near Rock Hill.  It doesn't have the cohesiveness of a city.  Its now just a merged-in suburb.

Ken, I hate to see you leave Alabama but if you got a chance to be close to family I say do it!

I live in Morganton, about 25 miles due west of Hickory on I-40.  There is a lot around Hickory to like.  When we need to do any major shopping, we go to Hickory, or Asheville or Charlotte, usually in that order.  All are within easy driving distance.  I go to Charlotte only occasionally and try to schedule it around the rush hours, whenever possible.  The traffic around Charlotte is a lot like the Washington, DC area traffic.  Since I used to live in the DC area for many years before moving here, I don't miss the traffic.

Our grandson, and his parents, live in Durham, so we are able to drive over to visit them every now and then, too.  I like NC.  There is a lot to do and see.  If you have any questions, I'm sure at least one of us could give you an answer.

Another vote for Hickory Ken! And - it is not terribly far to Albermarle for when you get that pizza cravin' ;D

Hickory is in the foothills of the Appalachian Mtns. Nice, rolling green country - and as Art and others have pointed out - a fairly central location which is close enough to be accessible to bigger cities - but far enough away to avoid the negatives of them.

I had considered Hickory very seriously before I "escaped" Charlotte. I go return to Charlotte several times a year, and miss it a little - but not enough to want to trade what I have quality of life in the mountains for the convenience of the city.

Whatever you choose - best of luck!
