Times are a changing......filed for bankruptcy today
-
I spent much of my boyhood in that store or dreaming about stuff in that store...
This was the best Christmas present I ever got...

they charge $25.00 for a .50 cent part no wonder.

Radio Shack used to be my favorite store back when I was building electronic gadgets. Back in the day, it was the only place around that you could buy a resistor or capacitor or diode. I kinda quit experimenting with circuits so that's got to be the reason they are going bankrupt. Yeah, right.
Actually, I did buy something at Radio Shack a couple of years ago when I was putting together my PID controller on the pellet pooper. They had the parts waiting for me on the shelf just like they always have. Probably gonna miss them when they finally go away.
Another thought....everyone knows that Radio Shack sold one of the first computers on the market and sold a lot of them, but they never really went into the computer parts business. They were perfectly positioned to sell motherboards, harddrives, processors, etc. to the people that wanted to put together their own computers, but they didn't go there. That would have been a perfect fit for the type of customers they all ready had. If they had done that, they would probably be competing with Best Buy and Fry's and Microcenter today.

Brought my first CB Radio from Radio Shack in the late 60's and also my first Computer Kit, much assembly required, back in 1976. Still buy a lot of hard to fine electrical items from them and will miss the store.

Bought my first CB radio and police scanner from RS, and a boatload of other electronic gadgets, loved that store. ;)

When I was a little kid one of the hobbies my Dad and I shared was building and racing slot cars. There were tracks that would hold races with cash prizes, and - it was a blast. Radio Shack was a mainstay for many things of that ilk. I built radios, and all kinds of things from the Shack.... And - I remember the first computer we had - a Tandy TRS-80. My Dad even developed a program for running some specific financial businesses built on the TRS-80.
Gonna miss 'em.....

I had the TRS 80...AKA Trash 80.
It was a lot of fun writing "programs" and then watching them run. Saved 'em on a cassette player - also purchased from RS.
Most electronics are "disposable" nowadays.
-
I bought that little flying helicopter last year from the shack. :D

Gonna miss Radio Shack but the type of products they sell is a dying art. Plus people now just buy the exact connectors, wiring, capacitors, etc that they need via the Internet.
They are only closing half their stores. The other half are being sold off and Sprint is involved because the existing stores that stay will have a sprint store within the store.

That was my second one. Could not think of the name but you reminded me, thanks.
Next I move on to a Tandy with two 360 drives. wow

So a bunch of us grew up using Radio Shack products.

My last few trips to Radio Shack for stuff I'd always gotten there before were a bust. What I got instead was a pitch for a cell phone and a "we don't stock those anymore". Alas, the chain has fallen victim to the significant change in delivery channels for both electronics and electronic parts. The cost of delivery through a dedicated store with inventory is too high compared to drop-shipping or focus on a much narrower product line. I'm gonna miss 'em :'(

When I was taking wood shop classes in high school I built a stereo component cabinet with bass reflex speakers and color organs, I bought the speakers and the color organ kits from RS.
