Post by: spuds on January 12, 2016, 05:11:02 PM
TMB brought up the moving to cord cutting idea.Im ready to drop dish, been experimenting just watching programing on the net.

Going to order the roku3 and see what their free programming is like.

Those who have cut the cable, can you tell us what youve been doing?

Roku is the most versatile of them all. Great app too.

I figured out I was paying about 10 bucks an hour to watch TV a while ago. Now with the antenna we get about 21 stations of which we watch maybe 10 regularly and the commericials are are least local..
We have a smart TV now and in the other room a smart DVD player which was less than a hundred bucks. I have two of the older Roku boxes but the tv pretty much does what we are interested in nod I don't use the boxes at all, although I have been thinking of revisiting the newer  Roku or Fire units.
We watch a lot of Netflix shows and Amazon shows.
You get spoiled quickly to no commercials ! I hate when we go to Kerry's moms and have to watch the amazing amount of commericials that are on cable. Paying to watch commericials is nuts...
My sister got the Apple tv like TMB and likes it pretty well so far.
You should like the Roku I think. I liked ours before the smart TV's for sure.
My brother in law has the full sports network so I just go over there with meat to grill when a good game is on...

We have DirecTV and love it.  It is a bit spendy but I find their customer service to be outstanding.

We recently added Amazon Fire TV and we do like it.  It has hulu but I don't think it is as good as ROKU.  Our Daughter uses ROKU and really likes it.  She moved into an apartment at college this year and did not want to (couldn't afford to :)) pay for cable.  She really like ROKU for Netfilx and Hulu.

Good luck

I'm looking at ditching cable tv - it has just gotten too expensive, will keep the net. We have Rokus in several rooms, and it looks like they get much more use than cable. For me, I can find ALMOST everything I want to watch and more on Roku. Just can't get the old B&W Perry Masons...  :'( Although it looks like I can get it on METV - antenna...  ;D

I haven't tried the others, but Roku has worked well - no problems and tons to watch.

Apple TV for me  ;)  90% of the stuff I watch is somewhere on the net and Apple TV has it.   I can get Hulu or Netflix and that alone covers dang near everything I need

Only draw back, I have a limit of 150 GB per month on my internet (AT&T sucks by the way)  can't buy more GB's  if I wanted to and DSL is all we can get where we live.

No cable runs near the farm, closest cable is 1/2 mile away and they want $1.95 per foot to run it to my house ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Guess you can hold folks back  when your the only game in town

Sorry, off my box now

6 mb speed at best sucks and mine runs 3 to 4 MB's

At time I have to let a show down load before I can watch it :-\ :-\ :-\

I use a Zidoo X6 tv box along with unlimited 6mb internet. It has any tv show, any movie, or any song I want. Effective March 1st, satellite service here in Canada has to offer a basic package for $25 by law. That will do for my local channels and then I can save $75 bucks a month. Then I can save up for a KARUBECUE.

spuds, I haven't cut the cord yet because my TV is not as smart as everyone else's. I don't even have HDMI...I have only component inputs which is why I can't cut the cord yet. It seems that I bought my technology way too early.

This is my story and maybe it will help you or someone. I am hooked up to Xfinity Cable through Comcast. I had 25 Mbps Internet and who knows how many channels. I didn't subscribe to any pay movie channels and my bill every month was $212. I had to return a couple of simple converters that I wasn't using in spare bedrooms to save a little money. When I was at the counter returning them, I commented how high my bill was (Ok, I cried how high my bill was). The sales person looked up my account and told me that since I had been with them for so long that she would give me a special discount. She knocked off $70 a month, included all HBO channels for free, and she jacked my internet up to 75Mbps without caps. Just got my bill this month and it is $142. Love it. I guess the crying did the trick. I have always hated Comcast because of poor and dumb customer service, but this is a case when something went right and now I love them. It could happen to you. Practice the tears.

We have Apple TV but can't cut the cord because if our sports addiction.  Don't like going to bars because you can't hear the TV.  We have unlimited GB useage.  My wife loves apple products so everything is linked with her computer, ipad, and iphone which is nice.

We did get it as a gift and have started using it more int he last 3 months compared to the full year before.  Our honeymoon location had free wifi so we brought it along to watch movies after nighttime activities around the resort.  Small enough to travel well.

My one friend has chromecast and he likes it.  He has an antenna to be able to watch football and local nightly news.

I have Apple TV. I mainly bought it so I could AirPlay from my iPad. The problem is that Apple limits what apps can and cannot AirPlay. And things like Amazon prime are not available.

With Chromecast you can stream from any newer android tablet or phone to your television.

The Roku offers the best selection of free and pay programs.

I too thought Apple limited what can be airplayed but they limit it within the app itself.  The new bottom screen upswipe should still allow you to airplay.  It allowed my wife and I to start watching  The Man in the High Castle .  We haven't finished it yet with crazy holiday work schedules, and now playoff football on both Saturday and Sunday, but we will get to it!

Great info!

I have only 3mps from Verizon DSL with my phone service.Does Verizon DSL go higher,I couldnt ascertain that from the web.

Otherwise I have to go cable and maybe use the magic jack for phone?I think its comcast up here? Smoke,do you know about that? Currently Im in for 190 /month for phone, net and dish, would like to cut it in half?

Cell phone is too poor of reception for 100% phone service. Its in and out depending on the phone Gods attitude.

I have Comcast (only cable choice here.) Tired of paying for 300 channels in 4 rooms and only using 3 or 4. So, current plan is to turn in all the cable boxes except the one in the family room. I already use Vonage for home phone (works through the cable modem and is cheaper than Comcast version.) The rest of the TVs will stay on Roku and local channels. I have to keep cable for interwebs for work. This should cut at least $125 a month from my bill.

Comcast "tossed in" their higher speed Internet. I've been testing periodically. Getting 90-120 down and 12 up. I do have an AC generation router, which you will need to get wifi that fast......I think

I am tethered to fiber optics cable through a local service called bright net. We have landline, TV with DVR, and internet service. The TV is my wife's baby and the internet is mine. We have Amazon Prime and Roku, and she is happy! I don't watch much TV but when I do I love being able to fast forward through the commercials after recording. In the old days, 50's and 60's you barely had time to go grab a snack during commercials; now I could pop some pop corn or make a sandwich!

The internet is my entertainment. I have two desktops, I just got a new one for the back porch and have one in a PC room, our daughters old bedroom. I have them hard wired through DSL and both connect via a router for internet connection.  I updated my router two years ago to a Linksys dual DSL and WIFI so the kids and grandson had internet access for their toys! I have a printer on both of my desktops and share them along with documents in my home network. I guess you could say I am wired!

Comcast is the worst.  Local company with HQ here in Philly.  They are building another brand new HQ (completed by Fall of 2017) maybe 2 blocks from current one which was finished in spring 2008.  Only other choice is Satellite TV, and that won't cover local sports programming because it won't carry COMCAST sports net.  Sports... the only thing keeping us in the Cable TV market. Now if the Phillies and 76ers could actually be a half decent product we would be back to enjoying sports more :P

Whoa whoa whoa!!! First, I'm a Stillers fan, my wife is an iggles fan.  The snow ball thing is a little over blown, it was a fill in santa and the guy was thin, not a jolly fat santa.  In addition the Eagles were losing and playing bad football (not much has changed since 1968 :P ).  Second, I believe beer cans and "wooder" bottles were being thrown onto the field in Cincy Saturday night.

Passion with Philly Fans, we as a city are not dumb and don't like when people feed us a bunch of BS.  We know sports in an out, Halloween 2008 was the craziest day I think I've ever seen in the city during the Phillies parade.  I drove home from school to go to the city, my high school changed the prep rally for homecoming from end of the day to first thing in the morning because so many people were going down the parade.  The whole area was semi shut down, now if the eagles win the city will completely shut down and be one giant party... that is a big IF

Just having fun along the way Spuds....And - our joviality does bump your thread to the top of the list, so that it gets noticed. We make it a policy to NOT be "thread police" on LTBBQ. If folks want to talk a little, and a thread wanders...it still keeps the thread "alive" so that anyone interested in the topic can see it - and comment. No one does this intentionally. It is just a mark of being in a pretty friendly and conversational place.

No more jail, the jail went away when "The Vet" was knocked down.  Lincoln Financial field is too "cooperate" compared to the vet.  Sorry spuds.  Depending on how much "live" tv you watch can really be cost effective.  My wife watches a lot of hulu and netflix, and like i said if it wasn't for our sports addiction we would cut cable out.

Hey its all good,Im just excited to get this cord cutting figured out.We are talking a thousand bucks a year possibly, wow, that adds up on our income.

I found a site that does live sports watching from around the world on web searching, dont have it handy at the moment.

Guess its time to get a roku ordered. If it doesnt play nice with dsl will go cable,Mrs not too happy on that, cable has a reliability and customer relations reputation of poor up here,so we will see how this progresses.

Google and u can find instructions on how to get more out of Kodi. There is various settings u can adjust to fix buffering issues and improve performance. The best addons I have found are Genesis, Phoenix,  Navi-X, and Sportsdevil. I had NO knowledge of any of this prior to last month and was able to find everything via Google and hook it up myself. It's pretty easy to do.

I'm a new Kodi user, using the "G Box". For some reason I've gone from moving around by tabbing up, down, left and right to an computer arrow. Searching how to fix in the settings?
