Title: Washington D.C. Trip
Post by: Pappymn on June 20, 2016, 08:59:46 PM
Well I had to come here for a conference. So I came out a few days early with them to teach them some history. They are 11 and 12, great age to show the things that made this country.

Original Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence always awed me and I made sure they felt likewise.
Monument tour: World War II, Korea, Viet Nam, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Washington.

Arlington National Cemetery and the changing of the guard.

Iwo Jima
U.S. Capital
Ford's Theatre

Various Smithsonian museums.

It was very important to me that my kids see these things. I didn't until I was 22.

I think I created a stronger foundation for them to appreciate the great American story. And to fight to retain the gains of others.

Had some great food too :)

That's an awesome trip!  It is a great thing to physically see locations of the history of this country.  You can learn anything you want from the internet (less so now but books as well) but to actually see and soak in the atmosphere is something everyone should experience

Our jr class trip in high school was to DC, it was about 18 months after 9/11 and we still got a tour of the Pentagon, supposed to be the White House but I believe it wasn't having tours yet.  We also went to Arlington, where I almost received detention for "wandering off", but was because I wanted to go to my great uncle's grave.  After hearing that I was told I should have let someone know and got out of it.  We also spend time with the cherry blossoms, at all the War Memorials, and Lincoln Memorial. We only had so much time for a day trip but you can really pack it in with everything so close.

Next stop on your historical trips should be Philadelphia, when you get a chance.  I take it for granted how much history is around here but seeing actual homes, roads, and building that are 250 years old is really eye opening.  If you have a car rental, Valley Forge isn't far away either.  Of course if anyone comes here, I can point you in the right direction for food, or under the radar sights.

Pappy, sounds like you had a good trip and some good quality time with the kids! How can you beet that, especially  when you  toss in the good food?

If you get a chance, Philadelphia is another great place to take them to show them history.   I bet you could probably hook up with akruckus while you're there too.

We took our kids there in the summer of 2002 and had a great time. My sister was living in Falls Church VA at the time so we stayed with her. Security was very tight because of 9/11 but it was OK. The FBI got possesion of my little Swiss army knife when we went to tour FBI HQ, forgot I had it in my pocket. We went from DC down to MD and took the ferry over to Cape May NJ for a little beach time. Might be the best vacation we ever took as a family, although it would be hard to say it beat Yellowstone. I'll call it a tie!

Pappy, you did a great job there!  It's a shame that more Americans don't take the time.

And it can be a very cheap vacation. The majority of what we did was free.

So great that you were able to do this.
So many schools do not want to teach real American History.
