Title: Teesquare's Southwest trip UPDATED 5-06-18
Post by: HighOnSmoke on April 24, 2018, 04:18:32 PM
Tee has been sending me a few photos of their trip and wanted me to post them here so you can follow along with them.
As he sends me more photos I will be updating it here.

This first one is especially for RG and his cafe road trips!  ;) Cafe is the Suburban Phoenix in Peoria, AZ.

Some SW Cuisine: Chili Rellanos. These are fantastic. Big Hatch green chili peppers - filled with jack cheese, then a nice egg batter dip, rolled in flour - then fried. Topped with lots of salsa and other veggies and served with a side of pinto beans a rice.

You still have time to make it the PERFECT road trip by joining, LA, IR2dum, and me in New Orleans next week. It's already started - SWMBO and I got in yesterday in time for oysters at Luke.

Just sayin'...

The early part of this trip Tim and Kaye was in Waco. Wendy and I came up from Marlin and had a good Mexican supper with them. Wendy and Kaye hit it off and Tim is one of the good ones :)

We are looking forward to having them over to the house for lots of red meat and adult beverages :)

Oh, Tim and Kaye also got to meet someone that we all know and love  ;)   ........and Kaye almost ran off with him  :)  :)

So I am finally getting some pictures reduced in size so they will work on our pages...
Please remember that ALL of these are straight from the camera. I have not done any correction on them - not even straightened the ones that are crooked.....

UntilI find my memory card for the first part of the trip...these pics pick up with eh Grand Canyon - then Monument Valley. Share your popcorn and turn off your cell phones..... ;) :D

First... When trying to take pictures....If you are going to beat the air pollutants, thermals rising, and - as was our case...any effect of wildfires in the region causing haze - you gotta get up early enough to kick-start the rooster and wakeup the milk man!

Then...you have to be patient, and hike for a few hours looking for where the light is good, and not facing the sun. Difficult sometimes. Take what nature offers.....Because complaining will not change things.... ;) 8)

After that golden few minutes...the light changes how things look. This is more true where the landscapes offer more shadow points, and altitude changes

So...the restaurant tries to grow all of the herbs for their cooking needs on the grounds. Bur, as you see here - tho they try to protect them from critters - it is not always successful....Wonder who would be so brazen as to destroy the cages to browse on the tender green parts?

HERE are the culprits.....And when you throw your curtains open in the morning.....it can be a bit of a shock for both parties.... :D :D :D :D
Here is the frustration for me...Every year, a struggle to get within 250 yards of an Elk - to get a shot. And I could practically thump these with a baseball bat...... ::) :D :D :D They knew they were safe.....

Another breath taker. I only wish that any camera could come close to the immersive experience that we have as humans. Our eyes deliver soooo much more information to our brain than we can rationally reproduce with a camera.

We left the Grand Canyon area, and headed East/N.East toward Monument Valley Navaho Park. This is owned by the Navaho Nation as part of their tribal lands. It is where many, many movies have been filmed - or at least big scenes have been. Back in the John Ford directed western movie era....folks like John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, etc....were pretty regular around Monument Valley. But - not just westerns...scenes from Indiana Jones movies, and Back to the Future also.

I was happy to see that it was not trashed by such tho. The Navaho ae strict about the respect and use of the land. SO, it remains a true treasure for all to see and enjoy....for a price :D :D :D. Hey - it's business. And - the Navaho are a quiet, reserved and welcoming people. A few pictures of Monument Valley.

This first one is just on the drive TO Monument Valley. Early  - about 6:15 a.m. - Had to pull over and take this first one. Some of the others were taken at about 80-85 m.p.h.....

And...YES the color of the sand rocks really are that red/orange. It is a brilliant a natural color as I have seen. This is a hogan. The traditional house made by the Navaho prior to the modern era.

Inside the hogan - this woman tells us about the symbolism of the way it is constructed, and always faces East. She also demonstrates how the Navaho worked with wool in order to make many household and clothing articles.

Of course their way of life is more modern now- tho the less than a dozen family that still actually live in Monument Valley Park - live "close to the Earth". Simple lives, lived outdoors much more than we do....

The "roads" thru the Park are not paved. And the land is still "grazed" by a few horse, sheep and cows. But it takes more than 100 acres per head  to grow enough o keep the animals alive. Feeding them additionally is the only real way to maintain them.

The last series of shots i will post here about Monument Valley are of the are where the petroglyphs  and ancient ruins are located. This is not part of the "main tour". We paid EXTRA....to get our guide to take us into eh back country of the Valley, to see these.

Not the evidence of the last rain...several months ago....the ground was as hard as concrete is is area.
