Title: New to the forum!!!Need help!?!?!?!?
Post by: Murse20 on January 04, 2013, 09:43:05 AM
Hello everyone!! I am new to the forum and very new to pellet grilling. I have run into a problem and need some troubleshooting advise and was wondering where to start. If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it greatly. I'm looking forward to gaining knowledge and sharing my pellet grilling experience with everyone.

I recently picked up the outdoor gourmet pellet grill smoker from academy.  Got it home and it worked great through two cooks.  Then it kept throwing the GFI every couple min. Ended up blowing the fuse. So I pulled the hopper off and replaced the fuse. After re assembling the hopper and turning it back on my auger and fan do not work??? Display works and I can hear an audible "click" but the auger and fan never come on... Any ideas as to what could be the problem??? I appreciate any and all info and help.. Thanks and hello!!!!!

I would make sure that the auger is not jammed first.  Are you running this from an extension cord? Is the circuit that you are plugging into already carrying a load?

We have several members here that are pellet grill savvy....they will be along shortly I will bet ;)

Throwing a GFCI like that is usually a sign that your ignitor rod is bad.

Try unplugging the ignitor rod and lighting the pellets manually (with a little lighter fluid or with a blow torch) and see if the unit runs OK. If it does, then it's definitely your ignitor rod.

Ditto on the ignitor rod (also called the 'hot rod') being the culprit.

Did you by chance knock some of the connections loose when you had the hopper off?

It is run from an extension cord yes... I'll check the hot rod this evening when I get home. And I double checked all the connections when re assembled. I haven't pulled the display off and checked those connection yet. Could the problem be there? Thanks to all for the advise

My first thought was hot rod as well, but if the fan and auger are not running it has to be a controller malfunction. I have never heard of that grille.. but you have to take the hopper off to get to the fuse??? Wow.. not a good design there..

or just call academy store where you got it and ask them about the problem.

There was a batch of the pellet grills that had a bad ignitor that would blow fuses. Call Academy customer service at 1-888-922-2336 and tell them about the problem and they should ship the part to you that would fix the problem. Worst case, take the grill back to Academy and either get one of the newer ones if they have it or your money back.

Academy has a pretty simple customer service policy, "no unhappy customers".  While that is impossible the way some people are, they pretty much make it happen.
