I was looking through my spice shelves recently and wondered if my spice shelves were typical of other BBQ cooks. I didn't bother to include all my "overstocks" as I keep them in several sealed containers. My wife thinks I have way too many spices in my collection. She may be right. She could get along just fine with salt, garlic salt and black pepper. I, on the other hand, will always add a new spice or herb to my stash. I keep only those spices/herbs that I use frequently, with a few exceptions. I regularly "cull" my spices and herbs if they are too old to keep any longer. Here is a look at my collection.
First up is my spice drawer, located right next to my cook top.

Next is the upper cabinet above the spice drawer. It actually took three pictures to include everything. The spices in the front are used most often. Here is the left side.

Next is the center.

And finally the right side.

The next set of pictures were taken in my pantry. This is where most all my rubs, spices and herbs used to make rubs or season sausage are located. You will probably see a few familiar names.

Art ...Do you have to have one of those signs on your house that tells the fire dept. what kind of hazards a fire could create....?

Somebody get a label maker for Christmas? I have about half that much and the wife gives me the stink eye. New stuff is stored in my garage to avoid detection.

WOW (http://i50.tinypic.com/20ztyfl.gif)
I probably have close to 100
but your collection blows mine away
much more organized than mine too ;)
for the last few years all my family and friends think I need more spices anytime they buy me a gift ;)
So true Captain, whenever it is gift giving season and you are thinking about gifts for someone that owns a pit, rubs and seasonings are the first thing to come to mind.

Okay Art, what do you do for entertainment? You know where everything is -- everything is in its place. Life must be boring when you can go right to the cabinet or drawer and pick out the jar, neatly labeled. At my house we have three shelves full of spices plus a couple of drawers and then there's the stuff that never really gets put away. My system is I start looking at the top shelf first, then move downward until I find what I'm after. The stuff I knock off and have to pick up goes over on the counter for a while until can find another place for it. This system works well because that jar is always in the last place I look for it. Also, if I don't find it after 30 minutes of searching, I go to the store and buy some more because I probably don't have it.

You're in a different league than I am. Dee

Last year I started putting my spices that I buy in bulk in these jars:

And cause I was lazy I just cut out the name for the lid:

Put them back in the box they came in:

Store them in the garage refrigerator:

As you can see I have more spices to put in jars too. A lot of the spices I use are for fresh sausage and baking. My "mixed" spices for grilling/smoking and everyday use are in the pantry. (which is a little messy so we won't go there right now :-[ )

You have given me inspiration to organize my mess of spices :) Thank you

Well, three months later I got a bit of a start on it today. Got some racks at Wal-Mart for 8 bucks and screwed them to the inside of the pantry door. There was already two on the door so I added three more that's why there not equally spaced apart. Works for me :)

I need to weed my out again, as I've only been using Kosher Salt, applewood smoked pepper and garlic lately

I just showed this to the wife and told her to stop complaining about the mere 2 shelves in the pantry I currently have my runs in. Thanks!!

I have upsized through 3 cabinets in the kitchen...and several plastic containers. Not sure where I am going next.

I showed Kimmie and she said "Don't even think about adding to your spice collection"

I showed Kimmie and she said "Don't even think about adding to your spice collection"
Does that mean I shouldn't bring the spices I have packaged for you to the Fall Gathering? I haven't met Kimmie yet and I don't want to make her mad.

Just a guess but I bet you'll find someone who'll take them (assuming Kimmie even lets Tommy attend).
-
The number of spices/rubs we have maybe the only things that approach the number of shoes our wives have. Dee

Art as a side note. Kimmie recently learned how to play Beer Pong. Bust out a table and you should be good to go!

Until this thing got bumped and refreshed I had tried really, really hard to forget Art's disgusting, organized post. That level of organization just makes me want to find another drink >:(. What fun is it if you can find everything? Between losing things and just plain old forgetting them I'm having a ball ;D

Mine are in a Tupperware container and not a big one. Is it like collecting coins, cards, cars... Investment. You can't even get soileau anymore. That has to be a collectors item.

Fear not my friend, you are not alone! I rather enjoy finding lost/hidden spices and rubs while searching for the one I want to use today.
