Title: Thoughts and prayers needed
Post by: TwoPockets on May 27, 2013, 12:58:21 PM
My wife Lana suffered a stroke at home on Saturday evening as was rushed to UAB hospital here in Birmingham. After several hours in the ER she was taken to the Stroke/Surgical ICU where she is now. They pretty much took 48 hours to stabilize her and run some tests but today the Physical Therapists will evaluate her to see how much damage was done and what might be coming down the road. This morning the DR said the MRI confirmed a stroke but it was not as bad as he had first thought. She has loss of function on the entire left side of her body and some loss of speech. She does not appear to have any damage to her brain or any loss of vision. Not sure yet if she will have to transfer to an inpatient rehab center or can come home for outpatient therapy. I came home for a bath and to pay some bills while some friends sit with her so I probably won't be able to check in much.

My sincere hopes for a speedy recovery for your wife.

I had a stroke at age 59. It has been eleven years and with the care that I have been given from the VA, and continued care, I have been 99 per cent for many years. Continue to be hopeful and take one day at time and tell her to never give up. Be forceful and determined. She will win.

With kind regards,

Ed

THoughts and Prayers from us over here too...

LA, great info on strokes.  I can't stress the importance of dialing 911 if you even slightly suspect a stroke.

In addition to the things mentioned, I would suggest checking facial symmetry by having the person smile. We are finding that an uneven smile shows signs of a stroke before most other basic tests.

Thoughts and prayers sent your way.  I had a stroke almost 18 months ago.  While I wouldn't wish it on anyone, it most certainly gave me a better perspective on the good things in my life.  It sounds like you all caught this is time to avoid any major damage.  Best wishes with the recovery.

All of this information is correct..I had a stroke on Valentines Day and the only symptom was I slurred a lil bit. If you even think you might have had a stroke..get it checked out. Better safe than sorry because the symptoms do NOT hurt. I never hurt. And that is scary.
All the best to Ken and his wife.. Pam .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ

And their prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make them well...  The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.
          James 5:15-16

Good and gracious Heavenly Father, thank you for hearing this prayer and holding Ken and Lana to your loving bosom as they face Lana's illness.  Watch over them and help them find the strength and discipline to persevere through Lana's treatment and recovery.  Please guide the doctors as they care for her; guide their minds and hands and inspire them that they may help her regain her health.

Wow, I came home for a bit to take a bath, check on the cats and pay a few bills. This is overwhelming!

When my first wife was sick for so long and then passed away we had a network of family and friends to offer support and prayers. It meant a lot. While Lana and I still have family and friends who are there, this is still overwhelming and humbling. While I have met a few of you in person for a few hours, it is hard to understand how close you can feel to people you have never met and how much you can appreciate when those folks are offering their prayers and support.

When I was growing up country folk like my Granny, Mom and Dad would being talking about a person and nod their head and say, "they're Good People".  Simple words that said so much and required nothing else.

Thank you, y'all are Good People.

Thank you Ken, coming from a good person makes the compliment even better!
I'm rather new around here, but everyone has "opened their door" to me, so to speak. And I appreciate that a lot. I was raised up being taught you bring kindness, and loyalty to friends as gifts for their friendship. Life is a circle, we help and are helped by the good folks in our circle. I'm so glad I was allowed in this family of friends!
I continue to think positive thoughts, and add prayers that each day is easier for you and Lana.

An update. Lana moved from UAB to the Lakeshore Rehabilitation Hospital this afternoon. This is the premier rehab facility in the South and also the home to the US Paralympic training facilities. As all the different departments evaluated her today there were no promises but they felt optimistic she would regain much of the lost functions, and possibly all.  She is in for 2 to 3 weeks of intense rehab and probably up to 6 months of outpatient and/or in home rehab. I am sure we will have to make some changes in the house and the way we do things, but that is all just stuff. She is determined to work as hard as possible on this and that will make a difference.

Again we both are humbled by the outpouring of support and we believe that will make a difference.

From her and myself, thank you all so much.

Lana has a problem sometimes comprehending why I spend so much time reading what a bunch of crazy people post talking about cooking, but when I told her about the outpouring of support from all of y'all she was touched and tearfull.

She just had her first full day at Lakeshore with intense workouts from Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Physical Therapy. All of them were pleased that she is stronger and much further along than they thought she would be. It is possible she could released in as little as a week and then will have outpatient/in home therapy for up to 6 months.

It is going to be a long road but everyone is now thinking she can have a full recovery and will be back to her normal self. That is good news, the bad news is she will be back to her normal self, Lord help me.
