Title: Stormy tonight - bought dinner to go
Post by: drholly on May 19, 2014, 08:46:56 PM
Thunderstorms today and tonight. My poor doggy, Roscoe is terrified of thunder. He's an 80# mutt that does NOT cuddle. Unless there is a thunderstorm. Then he is the most cuddly dog you could ever meet... He doesn't like it when I laugh at him, but I can't help it.

Girls are at friend's houses and too stormy to fire up any of the grills. So, Karen decided we should have Schlotzsky's - the causal /chain food muffuletta sandwich. No, it's not a "real" muffuletta - but it is pretty darn good.

Supposed to have good weather the rest of the week - will be out on the grills.

Cheers,

D

Looks good to me!  I like thunder storms, even though the poodle does not.  Makes for a very cozy evening  ;)

I love Schlotzsky's David! It is a Texas based chain that when I was a teenager began to spring up all over Texas.  Love their  Jalapeño bread with the pastrami ....OMG... :P :P :P

So...if you give the pooch a piece of your sammich - will it distract him front he storm? It would me! ;) :D

Roscoe appreciates everyone's concern and suggested I just give him my sandwich... that's just the way he rolls...  ;D

Karen introduced me to Schlotzsky's 30 years ago - YIKES! Back when we just met / worked together, before it was an official date. We used to have lunch there at least once a week. After all this time, it is still our favorite place to go together. When we go to Bismarck to see my Dad, found out they have one as well - perfect!

I know this is not a "real" muffuletta, but dang, it IS good. something addictive about it.

BTW, Roscoe will do fine, he has learned how to "milk" a storm for treats... he may be a mutt, but he is no dummy!

Pappy - yeah he IS all bark (and a scary one - he's got a voice for radio...  ;)) but no bite... :) - looking forward to the nice weather!

Grand looking Sandwich David!! Our cat slept between us for the first two weeks after we moved but is now once again comfortable on his kitty tree house :) You know cat's normal temperature is 101.5° F , that makes for a real warm night :'(

My wife and I love Schlotzsky's Deli.  Problem is, there are none close to us.  Your sammie looks good.  Save me a bite.

A good deli sandwich is hard to beat sometimes, looks good!! My cockapoo is not afraid of storms and thunder. A Dalmatian I had for 14 yrs. was scarred to death of storms. Don

David, you just brought back some fond memories. When I was in Austin, TX attending The University, Schlotzsky's was a very small sandwich shop next door to the now famous Continental Club just across the river on South Congress. Spent many a lunch money dollar on those warm sandwiches (and a few more dollars in the club). This was the original Schlotzsky's back in the late 60's....way before they franchised them out. They made sandwiches exactly like my German grandmother used to make every Sunday evening when I was just a kid, with warm homemade bread baked the day before, homemade butter, several different lunch meats, several different cheeses, lettuce, tomato, onions, and black olives. Not a lot of olives like a muffaletta, but just enough to make it interesting. A great sandwich.

Now another memory. About 10 years ago, my girlfriend and I were in Germany for a few weeks to visit her hometown, Mannheim, and her two brothers, Walter und Hansie. We decided to take a little side trip up north to Berlin for the weekend. It was time for dinner and we wanted to search out some authentic German food. As we walked through town looking for a good restaurant, we found this quaint little sidewalk cafe and went in to order our food. As we were looking at the menu on the wall (in German), it took us a while to finally realize that it was really a Schlotzsky's franchise store.....so we ate there two nights in a row.

I am now very lucky here in Houston. There are 3 or 4 Schlotzsky's stores very close to me and I eat there often. The original or #1 on the menu is still my favorite.

What great memories! Yep the original is still my favorite - I get tempted by the new stuff, but always go back to the original... The bread is fantastic!
