Title: CharBroil forum closing
Post by: nylic76 on June 05, 2014, 01:41:17 PM
Closing on June 10.  Does anyone know how to save some of the information.   There is a lot of good info there segregated  by food groups.....  pork,  beef,  chicken,  etc.   I'm  particularly interested in the big easy section.   Who knows how to save it for future reference.

The easiest method would be if the webmaster would make the relevant tables in the database available, but I doubt that they would do so.  Here's a link to a harvesting tool, but I have not used it, so I do not know if it will be effective:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/webharvest/?source=directory

Well they could link our forum since much of their base members have been relocated here.

As far as backing up the information you can go through and save the pages to your computer but that is a lot of information and will take some time.

I will always have a soft spot for the Sizzle on the Grill forum. It is a shame a big company like Char-Broil would let it go down the drain in the first place and then kill it off............... :'(

Smoke they did not see the value in it unfortunately. Could not keep the spammers out either.

Back in the day when CB ran the forum it was great. Then things changed after he left.

There were hundreds of people that we helped with their char-broil products at no charge. And probably thousands that were convinced by us to buy a Big Easy or RED.

Their internet media baby is Facebook and Twitter now.

Cut my teeth on that forum a few years back.   Got a LOT out of it--in fact, was persuaded to buy my SRG.  It bothers me even more that CharBroil doesn't think it's worth the effort to keep it going and figure out what to do about the spam.   That's what drove me here, but I still check it quite often.     :(

Really a sad day  :(  but by the same token you knew deep down it was going to happen.

I was one of the first members to join and loved the site as much as anyone but I had to draw a line somewhere when it fell apart the way it did.   I will say I have met some of the best folks out there on that site and that in itself was worth the $$$$ of admission.   I mean where in the world can you meet someone like Pam?  Her sausage and gravy is worth the 6 hour drive to Augusta and Dee, those photos of all the great cooks just leaves one speechless.

There are so many people that made a big difference over there and now we are HERE!  The info may or may not be lost but the friendships will last a lifetime!

Be thankful to Tim for starting this forum so we would have a place to go and share.

The CharBroil site may be going but the people are still going strong!

To CB, thanks for bringing all of us together

It is a sad day. I gained a lot of info on infra-red cooking that I may not have elsewhere. I also met quite a few wonderful folks there that I probably wouldn't have elsewhere. There was a lot of sharing and caring, until Barry was let go. He was/is a true gentleman! Lastly I want to thank Tommy for inviting me to this site, where the sharing and caring goes on as-a-matter-of-fact! Tim has made a great yard for ALL of us to play in, and just so you know, I'm not leaving! I like it too much!  8)

I will always be grateful and thankful for Sizzle on the  Grill forum no matter how sadly its demise.  Without it I would never have met any of y'all here and some on there who did not come over to join us here.

My wife is the one who's responsible for getting me in IR cooking and ending up here.  It was my birthday, Father's Day or something like that and she had asked me what I wanted for a present and I told her I wanted an electric smoker by MasterBuilt.  As with most of things, she failed to follow my instructions and thankfully she did. When she was in the store one of the salesmen show her the infared cooker known as The Big Easy and she bought it instead.  That was the start and shortly afterward I joined Sizzle on the Grill and of course the rest is history.

I thank SOTG for bringing me together with you and I'll continue to cherish that.

Dee

I am an "n" of 1 - but if I had to interact with LTBBQ on Facebook or Twitter - I would not be doing it nearly as often, and eventually probably not at all... It is important to understand who  your customers and prospects are - for Char Broil's sake I hope theirs are Gen Y.

I suspect that their Product Managers have determined that their target population demographic is made up of facebook and twitter users and not necessarily forum frequenters.

Demographers have labeled—
          1900-1924 - G.I. Generation
          1925-1945 - Silent Generation
          1946-1964 - Baby Boom Generation
          1965-1979 - Generation X
          1980-2000 - Generation Y also Millennials
2000/2001-Present - Generation Z also New Silent Generation

In some peoples' minds the dates move slightly, but there are definite trends within each grouping.  If you were trying to sell a product to new users and develop brand loyalty you would probably support the social media that your primary prospects use, especially if you can't spend an appreciable amount on another medium.

Think about your habits and those of your friends.  If they're Silent Generation they may use forums  (it's much like email) but facebook and twitter use is uncommon.  If  they're Baby Boomers they're probably email and forum users but there are still only a smattering of facebook and twitter users.  Generation X quickly adopted facebook and began to migrate away from forums.

Generation Ys are getting married and buying their first grills.  Advertise to them and build brand loyalty.  Communicate with them via the media they use most—facebook and twitter.

I think D.R. was right, "[F]or Char Broil's sake I hope theirs are Gen Y."

Good analysis Paul. My work shows tha that are vastly more Baby Boomers  than any other generation buying - and using outdoor cooking equipment/grills. Why? They have more time ( most are at least partially retired) and they have worked long enough that they have more discretionary income. The kids are grown, and...well - a grill or smoker - combined with a good adult beverage is often much better than a therapist... ;) ;D

Very true, you'll never see a grill or smoker and a keg setup outside a therapist office.  ;)

I didn't think about that.  I suspect that you're right.  A forum is their home.

My story is so similar to Dee's story.
My wife bought me The Big Easy for Christmas in 2007 and in their manual, they offered their forum.  I joined so i could get some tips on how to use TBE.  In 2008, I got a CharBroil 4 burner Tru-Infrared grill and launched my "career" in backyard cookin'.
I became friends with many of the notorious people on that forum (you know who you are).  One afternoon I got a call from CB.  He was gonna be passin' through and wanted to stop by and take Deb & me to supper.  HECK NO!!!  We're gonna cook out.  I had not met Dee at the time, but knew he was about 3 hours away.  I invited him to come over to meet CB and we had a great time together for about 8 hours.  It was like long lost friends getting together again though our only connection was the forum.

I didn't know much about cookin' back in those days, but CharBroil's forum and LTBBQ have brought me along with a lot of patience.

We've also had Don Bremer from Houston stop in several times as well as Tommy, Lost Arrow, High on Smoke (Michael) and Foodie Albert Rivera and his wife.  Don usually comes over about twice a year and when we put the word out, the others like to join us for the cookout.  We're just blessed to have made so many friends here.

So, yeah, I'll be kinda sad to see that chapter close, but I am "happy as a pig in slop" to be HERE with even MORE notorious people who really know how to cook and HAVE FUN DOIN' IT!!!!

Pics???  you wanna see pics?  I have one of CB and me (there was a joke goin' around about my white coat)
I have one of CB & Dee at our kitchen table and there is one of the 2 inch thick rib eyes that CB bought and had me cook.
Lemme see if I can dig 'em up...

It is a shame. :( I cut my teeth with SOTG, first with TBE(early 2009) looking for ways to use it, man did I find ways to use it. Because of the site I went on to buy more CB products:
RED (12/2009)
Fatboy (01/2010)
Electric smoker (1/2006) that CB posted a discounted price on.
BEESR (10/2011).

My first TBE died because I used it so much and I bought a second one. I still have all of the above, except the BEESR that I did not like. I use these products daily and now I am in the market for a new gasser, charcoal grill or smoker. Too many toys on my list but not enough $$ in the bank. >:(

I seriously doubt if I will be going back to CB. I am really starting to lean towards Weber for the charcoal grill. Not sure about the gasser (still un-decided) because I love the way the RED cooks a steak and not sure what other grill that can cook a steak like that. My problem with the RED is I had to replace the emitters twice and close to having to replace them again. The lettering wore off and after replacing it, it wore off again. The controls do not line up correctly. There are other issues but not here to slam that cooker.  I’ve had it for years and not sure how many years I am supposed to expect to get out of a $600 grill.

As for the smoker I have smoking-it #3 http://www.smokin-it.com/category_s/5.htm on my short list.

Point to all this rambling is, doesn’t CB understand the marketing gain with a site like SOTG brings? I now own the following and use the following spices because of LTBBQ:
Tatonka Dust
6” A-MAZE-N-Tube
40LB of CookinPellets 40H Hickory Smoking Pellets
Set of GrillGrates
Savor Spices
Etc… It called marketing….

I always defer to the position that if I haven't tried it - that does not mean it is not a valid method - it only means I do not know enough about it.  But - now that I have tried it - I can tell you with complete confidence that, just like adding an A-Maze-N smoker tube, or using a remote digital thermometer...most of us were skeptical before using those too. ;)

I believe that using Sous Vide as an additional skill set - NOT as a replacement for grilling or smoking will only add to your abilities. Like improving one's knife skills...or learning how to flip the contents of a pan without losing them to the kitchen floor - this skill set just adds to what you already do well...and might make it better ;D ;)

Interesting.....I get the same comments here....often. It's almost as if all of our women were versed on the subject collectively! Which reminds me of a book I read several years ago by Roger Welsch. He used to be on CBS Sunday Morning News. His book was called, Everything I Know About Women I Learned From My Tractor. Great read by the way. He swears that when a girl is born, she goes to Women School. They seem to get the attitudes against us wholesome beasts, at an early age. I thought it was humorous at first, but now I'm thinkin'  this might be true. Guard your cookers men!!! :D

My Deb acts the same way every time "I expand my horizons". Her attitude quickly changes after the first time she tastes the food. Also when she realizes that she doesn't have to cook that much anymore

Wow, that really is sad. I learned so much and was saved several times by the information there. I even converted my wife to everything bacon wrapped!! My SRG would not have been used so effectively without that forum.

The good news is that most of the contributing members are here now. Lot's to share and continue the good times ;D.

I'm glad they are here now, lots of great information being shared on LTBBQ.  ;)

lol...
Deb will be the one kickin' &  screamin'...then she will hunt you down in the Fall.
She just doesn't understand why I need so many things to cook with.

Just sayin'...

I have been out of town and out of touch for a week and just saw this subject. I bought a TBE cooker after I almost burned our house down frying a turkey and joined SOTG to find out more about it. I made many good friends there and learned a lot about many different kinds of cooking. I went to the first fall gathering, drove over 5 hours from Birmingham, visited for a couple of hours and then drove 5 hours back. We were hosting a party for friends that evening to watch football and I had to be home. I found this forum and then dropped membership in SOTG after it fell off and all the spam started. I enjoy this forum better and like that it is not geared to any one vendor or one style of cooking.
