This is the time in pet ownership when true love for God's lesser creatures must be honest and brave.  Those who truly love their pets do not desert them.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this — the last battle — can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
 Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close — we two — these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Sorry to hear, but you did a great thing by rescuing her and giving her a great life.  The steak dinner was a great thing, may she rest in peace pain free, and give you the strength to continue enjoying the get memories you shared.

So sorry to hear this. A pet can hold a place in your heart as much as one of your children. As time goes on just try and focus on the good times and the joy she gave.

Brother,

All I can say is my heart really goes out to you and your family. Our pets sure have a way of worming their way into our hearts and lives, don't they?

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Scally my Brother, my Friend, I have been there....... more than once and it is never easy.  She is a beautiful dog and I am sure a wonderful friend.  The post from Hub ... by an anonymous author has said it better than I can do.  I know your pain and I will pray for strength and peace for you.

Really sorry to read of your loss, scally.  We lost our baby girl, a toy poodle that was completely blind to a heart attack on 11/21 - she was only 13.  My wife carries around a little stuffed poodle toy and places her in the same spots as her baby.
