They say all dogs go to heaven
« Reply #-1 on: April 28, 2015, 11:21:06 PM »
Roscoe got his wings yesterday.
He made it 12 years, and we recently found out that the had a large - and growing tumor on his spleen. After much hand wringing - and knowing how hard it would be on him, we elected to just make him as comfortable as possible for as long as he could stay with us.

We had hoped he would make it until this weekend, when we could spend all day Saturday with him....but, when he got up yesterday he was  just was so weak  that I elected to call the Hospice Vet we had on call, to come to our house and keep him from suffering. Really hard to make that call - but, harder to watch him and know that there was nothing left that he could enjoy. He wobbled to the back door and looked up as if to say - "just let me out one more time to lay in my yard please".  So - I did.

When he had been out for about 30 minutes, he struggled for a while to get up - and wobbled back to the steps. I had to help him up them. He made it to his bed, and sort of fell down into it. My wife had come home from the office. Also a very hard call to make...and tell her "it's time" as Roscoe really was her dog. A real Momma's boy.

The Mrs. always called him her little angel. So, he got his wings, and - went while lying in his own bed, surrounded by the the people he loved unconditionally, and that loved him for 12 years.

"At the end of it all - we are not measured by our height and weight, nor our accomplishments - but rather the indelible marks ( or paw prints ) we we leave on the hearts of others."

May God grant me the half the love that Roscoe made others feel......

Thanks Paul - I am humbled daily by my interaction with dogs. They ask almost nothing of us, and give everything to us. What a poor example of a "superior species" we have proven to be thus far......

They have no hidden agendas, nor animosities...( o.k. - there is that "cat" issue for some ;D ) and are happiest when allowed just to be near us.

The lessons they can teach us if we are only humble enough to learn.....

T - I am bawling not the least because my dog's name is Roscoe. But I had to go through that with my best friend - Damien many years ago. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your wife and Roscoe... Dang it!

Tim and Kaye,
Maureen and I will miss Roscoe, too.  I think I will always remember how he would come over and put his head in my lap and look up with those sad eyes of his.  He made me feel like I had taken "his" chair.

Roscoe, you will be missed.

Thanks folks. Ellie Mae ( our other dog ) is wandering around looking for him. She will go to the windows, and walk back to his bed and sniff it and make these whimpering noises....Just nothing to do but wait for her to get over losing her big brother too.....

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
 Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
