Mispronounced?
« Reply #-1 on: August 19, 2015, 05:49:50 PM »
First, I want to apologize, in advance, because my brain thinks about all sorts of crazy bullsh!t things, and puts them together in all sorts of crazy ways, and it does it all the time.  I can't seem to make it stop and it drives my girlfriend crazy.  So, read on at your own risk.

I've always called a Weber a Wĕber (and by that I mean it has short "e" vowel sound).

This afternoon I was talking my neighbor. He told me that he was scrapping his current grill because his wife was letting him get a Wēber (long "e" vowel sound).

I didn't make a point of correcting him, but i did talk about my Wĕbers and how much I enjoyed them.  He continued calling the one he was getting a Wēber.

After about five minutes or so, we went our separate ways.  I just figures it was an Aunt (ant) vs. Aunt (Auuuunt) kind of think and went on about my business.

But, a little while later I got to thinking about the phonics lessons drummed in to me by the Sister of St. Joseph.  (And I do mean drummed!  In fact, I got the meter stick because the pointer broke over the back of my hand one time!)  And you know, based on those beatings (oops, I meant teachings) for it to be a short "e" it really should be spelled Webber, not Weber.

Sorry, again!

Big Dawg, you're not the only one!  It drives me crazy when I hear someone pronounce it, "Wēber," with a long 'e'.

You can rest assured that your original assumption is correct. It is pronounced Wěber - with a short e.

Weber is a name (originally the Weber Bros.) and names do NOT follow American English spelling rules.  Besides, every Weber commercial or promo spot I have ever seen pronounces it Wěber - with a short e.

Here's a vintage Weber commercial:

On the other (linguistic) hand, the name comes directly from the German word "(der) weber" (which translates as "(the) weaver") and therefore might oughta be pronounced as "vay-bur." Or not.

Hanz and Franz say that it is pronounced with a short "e" and only weak girly men would use a long "e" :P

Alas, there are no rules of pronunciation when it comes to proper names.  Ya' takes yer chances and go with the flow.  I agree with the short e, but Mr. Weber could pronounce it "Smith" for all we know.   I knew a fellow named Talliferro once.  Turned out to be pronounced "Toliver".  Not even a nun with a stick could correct or predict that twist  ::)

That's funny!  Small world, Hub,

When I first started teaching, I was in this really rural county along the Chesepeake. The county so far back in the sticks, there was only one stoplight in the entire county!

Anyway, we had two families that both spelled their name "Talliferro."  One family pronounce the way it is spelled, and the other, Tolliver.
