...but I am one of those people who like sauce on bbq and on steak (oh my!). Save your comments about if it needs sauce then it's not good.  Not true.

So am I, and I agree!   ;)

Looks and sounds like a great feed but as much as I love brisket and most other types of BBQ I'm not so sure I'd stand in line for 5 or 6 hours to buy an order from anybody. Maybe for some "quality time" with Ann Margret, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ellen Barkin, and/or Sharon Stone in their (our) prime but for BBQ? Maybe. Maybe not. I guess I'm not as addicted as I thought.

It's part of the experience. It's cool to talk to all of the people around you,  everyone is from somewhere different. The food was worth the wait,  trust me on that.  I am not one to wait,  I don't have the patience but talking, taking pics, watching guys play beer pong.....it went by pretty quickly.

Are you going anywhere else?

B T W, you really should get Franklin's book, "A Meat-Smoking Manifesto", just to read his life story. The rest of it is about building and maintaining a good fire in your smoker and how to smoke meat. (that part is good, too)

I hope y'all get to go to LockHart.

just sayin'...

Hey Jack, I have that book.  Good read! As for bbq travels, that will be it I am afraid.  We were planning on hitting the Salt Lick but neither my wife or I can take anymore 'cue and dare I say it may be a while before I even make any myself, lol.

I've eaten these places on my travels so far :

Day one : Bacon Cheese Burger for lunch at a dive bar somewhere in Alabama at a joint called Butch Cassidy's
Po Boys and gumbo with Cajunate at Parkway Bakery in Nola

Day two : "Breakfast" at the Hyatt in New Orleans
Muffuletta from Central Grocery that Caj brought us for lunch
LA BBQ for dinner

Day three : Very light breakfast at Residence Inn in Austin
Franklin BBQ for lunch (with leftovers still on ice, lol)
Slice of pepperoni pizza and Voodoo Doughnuts for dinner

Day four : Nasty breakfast again from the hotel
In-N-Out burgers for lunch on the way to San Antonio
Dinner was a burrito as big as my head, brought leftovers back to the room that will be thrown away.

Today will be breakfast at Drury Inn before we leave to head back to New Orleans
Lunch to be determined.

At this point, I am thoroughly disgusted with any and all food. My stomach hates me and I am miserable, lol.

So......no Lockhart, no nothing closely at all related to bbq. I will do well to ever eat again after this trip  :P

Wondering what makes Franklins BBQ so good?

Salt and Pepper rub...we can all do that

Uses a pit with logs of wood......we can all do that

Is it the grade of the briskie that sets it over the top??

Rumor has it that Franklin spritzes with pickle juice during the cook. We don't do that.

... and you were doing so well.  Man up! (or "Cowboy up!" since this is mostly Texas-related). There's NEVER a reason to skip Lockhart when you're within driving distance (unless maybe there's a death in the family and it's you). That rule holds especially true for someone who already braved the line at Franklin's.

Settle down boys, it was never my intention to go to Lockhart. The primary spot was always Franklin BBQ. I figured on eating at 3 places. LA Barbecue, Franklin and The Salt Lick. Ate 2 and that was enough. My daughter is VEGAN so we had to find food for her too, not an easy task, lol.

Maybe there will be another trip where I can hit 2 or 3 more. If it were a scenario where I had flown in, that would have given me far more time but driving left me only so much time to be in one place.

That's why I called this a mini bbq crawl  ;D
