Bought a performer. Is vortex too hot for GG?
« Reply #-1 on: July 06, 2016, 12:59:08 PM »
Should have the performer home tonight or tomorrow.  Was considering the vortex but plan on using GG. Should I be worried about it being too hot for the GG aluminum?

That's a good question! I have not used the 2 together, and I probably would not. GG's can indeed melt with enough heat...

Another grilling option for a Weber Kettle
« Reply #5 on: July 07, 2016, 12:55:10 AM »
I have a Vortex and do like it but can offer another option for great grilling as well but at about 1/2 the cost of the Vortex that does a fine job with most backyard grilling on any Weber 18-1/2” and larger.

The part is a Culina  Stainless Steel vegetable and BBQ basket from Amazon at $19.95 that measures 15X11X2 inches which is the perfect size to match the standard Grill Grate pair which measures 13-3/4 by 10-1/2 inches. I use this for my charcoal basket.

This is the basket loaded with hot lump charcoal in a 18-1/2” kettle. Notice how close to the cooking grate this basket is sitting.

This is a standard pair of Grill Grates over the top of this charcoal basket.

Sears a nice steak at this close distance.

And for many, who still own one of the great Weber 6560 large cast iron griddles, it is as well an exact fit for this charcoal griddle at 13-1/2 by 10-1/8 inch wide.

To use in the larger Weber kettles, I just roll up four pieces of tin foil into some balls to raise this basket all the way up to my cooking grid or find something else suitable for this task to sit the basket on.

Of course, you do have to cut the handles off of the basket to use it in your Weber kettle....

Thanks for the input.  Also saw someone cut a stainless dog food bowl or mixing bowl down and made a vortex.  Most likely wouldn't use the low/slow aspect of slow and sear as I have the PBC but any thoughts on the pro/cons of sns vs vortex?

I saw your post this morning and decided to go to the source for the answer....Grill Grates!
I sent in the question and got a prompt answer from Michael Dellaporta, who said.....
"It should be fine to use your Grill Grates over the Vortex but I would have to suggest you do not put the GG's in place until a few minutes before you are ready to sear. They will heat up rather quickly.  Would probably be best to remove them once you are finished cooking. "

I'm the one who made the mixing bowl Volcano. (as I call it) It was a double thick stainless steel bowl from Kuraidori. (Home Hardware). About 20 bucks. Works like a charm. With terrible Canadian exchange rates and shipping I have to build a lot of my stuff.

Thanks hikerman for the "from the source" info. Along with all the responses.  Brought my new baby home tonight and gonna do my burn in.  Still up in the air what the maiden voyage is gonna feature.  AKA... She hasn't said what she'd like for me to cook yet.   I'm feeling the vortex think that's gets ordered after dinner tonight. I've seen some amazing pics on here.  Thanks again. For the record? Am I posting these questions in the right forum pages?? New guy? Pretty much to any forums.

You are doing great! If we ever feel it is beneficial to move a thread or post - it is only to help you by the thread in a location that will be more relevant - or easier to find . This is often he case when we post recipes in other places, and an Admin or Mod will see that - and relocate the recipe so it does not get buried in the numerous threads of the General Discussions.

Michael from Grill Grates emailed me a bit ago about a temperature parameter. He said he wouldn't go much past 900F on the GG's as aluminum melts at 1200F but will warp before hitting melting point!
Hope this helps avoid warpage! :o
