I am thinking of the Yoder-YS640 or the Blaz'n.  Something in that category.  I am interested in a pellet type smoker.  I do not plan on any competition, but would like something I could use to feed a large crowd.  I really like the MAK, but can't spend that much.

The MAK 1 Star is in line with the pricing for the Yoder...And will outperform it. I have owned a few pellet grills - and would try to talk you into examining the MAK. If you want similar capacity - it has a more useable upper rack, thus as much practical, useable space. If you want All American - ...MAK will not even buy a fastener made in China. And if you want a machine that can be up-graded, and has the capabilities of 3 meat probe ports, and a WiFi controller for folks that are busy and can't sit by the grill You ned the MAK.
Lastly....I owned a Yoder.....you need a MAK.... ;) ;D

Welcome from northern Cali.  Go on Craigslist and get yourself a WSM and a weber kettle.  With these two items you can cook anything.  Learn the basics first.

Here's my contribution for some reading on pellets while you decide which cooker to buy:
