A lot of good replies here, thanks. We have all done silly things but if we admit it; it may help others. An additional point is with any cooker that uses electricity, do not leave plugged in when not in use. I read where one pellet smoker owner had his start up while turned off and nearly caused a fire. Hard to believe but electrical equipment can fail in strange ways. Don

Just noticed my fire extinguisher for the deck has past the expiration date. Probably would still work but will go get a new one. Having nearly burned down my house the first time I ever deep fried a turkey, I don' t believe in taking any chances.

We keep a fire extinguisher in the sunroom next to the grill area, one in the kitchen, basement, LR, next to the fireplace, & one upstairs in the bedroom.

We also always take one to the games in my SUV.

We have 14 smoke detectors & two portable ones for traveling in our house.

For Carbon Monoxide detectors we have seven in our house.
We have two escape ladders set-up for the upstairs rooms.

We keep our propane tanks outside & i keep my gas cans in a shed.

We have a fire proof carpet in front of the fireplace.

My grill is  a couple of feet away from the house (i would like to move it away even more).

i got a pool.  if anything catches fire i just throw it in the pool.  i always thought common sense of cleaning my equipment would work.  but, i don't have a fire ex out back.  i will get one today.  i do have kids who use my bbq's.  they don't have common sense.   :'(

How many grills you got at the bottom of the pool?  Is it like a man made reef in there?  ;)

Most ABC extinguishers are what's called dry chemical... they have a powder that extinguishes the fire but they make a big mess <don't ask how I know>. CO2 is another option but more expensive.
