I am headed for the the motherland......TEXAS
« Reply #-1 on: July 12, 2013, 01:54:04 PM »
Folks, I am leaving here Tues. morning like being shot out of a cannon - for Texas. The wife and I have some business in Dallas/Ft. Worth - butI would love to meet up with any of you in the areas I will be traveling.

Thurs-Sat. I will be in the DFW area. I am going to have lunch Friday with EFGM in Dallas.
Sunday I will likely drive out to Abilene, then San Angelo, Brownwood, the back down into the Hill Country. Definitely want to go thru Giddings for sausage, and Lockhart for BBQ. San Marcos is an old haunt of mine that I want to visit again...At some point I have promised to take the Mrs. to the Alamo, and the River Walk in San Antonio. May try to get into Austin and stand in line at Franklin's for brisket there....
Gotta go thru Shiner of course.... ;D

Also - need advice on the best real Tex-Mex food in these areas. Been a loooong time since I had real Tex-Mex.

It will be the wrong time of the year to go further west into the Trans-Pecos, so I will swing back up thru East Texas and visit some old memories there as well.

I truly would like nothing better than getting together and grabiing a bite to eat with any of you along the path, and the path can vary to accomodate that. ;D

I'd love to meet you T.  Shoot me a PM with where in the city you will be and such.  An early Thursday lunch would be perfect.

P.S. I work in Plano.

I live in New Braunfels, TX which is just outside of San Antonio.

Your wife will enjoy River Walk and the Alamo is always great from a historians point of view. Lots of good Tex-Mex everywhere even on the River Walk.

When will you be in the San Antonio area?

I think somewhere around 93% of Americans visiting the Alamo for the first time say one of two things...

     - I thought it was bigger, or
     - Why did they put it in the middle of the city?

Smart Americans visiting the Alamo for the first (or any) time are duly impressed and then repair to the bar at the Menger Hotel to contemplate their good fortune.

Probably in the fall. I may sneak out of here in Aug. to go to the "SweatSmoke Out"  :D  in Iowa that 10.5 is hosting.

Give me a call if you can get to South East, Arkansas. Next weekend we will be here at the house doing a practice cook for a "gala" fund raiser in August. We will be having all sorts of grilled and smoked meats. Steak, pork loin, duck breast, grilled Tex-Mex type food just to name a few. If you can't make it next Saturday, let me know when you can. We will do some of it again! Hey, ANY reason to cook will work for me!

I will be sure to let you know what the Mrs. says - not my first time to the Alamo, and - I agree with both. The Alamo assessment - and the Menger. Hell - I think I will stay there if I can get a room. Need to see exactly when I will wind up in S.A.

Would love to do it! Let me check my routing on the way back out of Texas. Because I am leaving here on Tues - and the Mrs. has an appt. on Thurs. at noon....my only chance is on the way back ;)
