Can one use regular cotton twine to truss with?
I have had this around for years it is Redi-Tie General Purpose Cotton Twine. Would it be fine to use?

I would say yes as long as it does not come in direct contact with flames.

You're right about plastic Pam.

I've never been able to master tying meat with twine (no one ever taught me!  :( ) so I like to use silicone food grade - up to 600ºF - washing machine safe Hot Cooking Bands  ;D  ;D  No fuss ... No muss  ;)

Use them with all sorts of roasts but mostly with boneless pork butts to keep everything together

The silicone bands work great too and they are cheap at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Pam .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

Used regular ole cotton twine for years and years.   Not so easy to find these days UNLESS they label it food grade twine, which is just an excuse, IMHO, to kick up the price.  Agree on the silicon bands--they work great and much easier for two left thumb people like me to manipulate.

I bought some of the silicone bands but haven't used them yet. I still have most of a roll of butcher's twine that I use on quick things, never had a problem with it burning.
