Greetings from north Texas.  Honest question... are you looking to smoke, grill or both?

First welcome from Alabama!

Since Dee is your father in-law I'm sure he has leaned you towards INFRARED grills which I totally agree!

But, with your back ground in cooking I'd also toss in a ceramic grill such as a BGE or the likes and even add a CharBroil 940x

looking forward to seeing Monday night at dinner

I'm in my own quandary about that same question...I'm gonna have to "kick the can down the road".

B T W, welcome to the forum..."Uncle Devious" is a pretty nice guy most of the time.  I'm sure he's a good friend as a father-in-law.

Your FIL is right, you do need to cook more BBQ.  Instead of making a rash decision about any particular grill or type of grill, I would recommend reading the posts here about the various types of grills and then attending the Fall Gathering and cooking on a few of them.  You will gain first hand experience and have access to a lot BBQ knowledge.  Right now Sparky (LTBBQ Rib Meister, extraordinaire) is planning to attend and show us all how to cook some serious ribs.

Over time you will probably do like a lot of us here. We add a new grill or type of cooking to our collection every now and then.  And that's not all bad!
