Title: I got (another) box!!
Post by: SmokinKat on October 16, 2014, 05:11:46 PM
In addition to my jerky cannon (for my introduction into the wide world of sausage making and meat curing)  I got another box from the post office!

Drumroll.... aaaannnnd....

BOOM !!!    Forty more meat chickens!

(http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae138/katrinarounds/20141016_122646_zps74b7f202.jpg) (http://s965.photobucket.com/user/katrinarounds/media/20141016_122646_zps74b7f202.jpg.html)

These are a different variety than we normally get, they grow a little slower than the Cornish Cross variety that are most common.  Which means they will take a little longer to get to size, but they're less prone to health issues because they don't grow so crazy fast.   (Sorry, Smoker Pete, no Godzilla chickens this go-round!!)  :)

They're already more active and chipper than the C.C. variety, they tucked right into the food and water, and are running about like crazy.

Also since they'll be 'coming of age' right in the middle of winter here in a couple months, I'm going to have a local facility do the processing for me, rather than butchering all by my lonesome like I usually do.

Those are so cute, I couldn't eat them  :(      I'd  give them names so they would be pets  :D :D

Live and in a box just seems weird to me.

Thankfully they get ugly pretty quick!   We do have a couple of laying hens we've named-- too much personality for the stew pot!   It's also a lot easier to not get too attached when you have a gazillion of them.   :)

Live and in a box just seems weird to me.

It's pretty crazy-- they get shipped from almost all the way across the country, too!  They DO handle them more gently than regular mail.    After chicks and ducklings hatch, their little bodies are still running on the yolk "fuel" from the egg, so they can do without food/water for about 2 days with no problems.  It was pretty surreal the first time I ordered them-- just couldn't believe they got MAILED to me.  The folks at the post office are always just giggly excited when I pick them up.  :)

I would be alright with eating them, UNLESS my wife saw them this little! I would have to build another
room onto the house!  8) ;)

Exactly why they stay down in the barn-- otherwise I'm pretty sure James would have them all named in a heartbeat, and I'd be having to explain why chickens do NOT make good housepets!

I'm secretly terrified that I'm slowly turning him into a vegan with all this exposure to cute baby animals.  Thank God for this forum amping up my cooking game to keep things balanced-- as long as they keep tasting so delicious, I've got some hope for him!!

They look delicious already.  ;)

I call this the "nugget stage", which James says doesn't help.
