Title: 18 incher
Post by: DK117 on January 28, 2013, 05:22:42 PM
ok, I tried to light my 1/4 full 18 inch amazen tube smoker for some wings yesterday.  I figured I needed it lit for maybe 2 hours.  This is only my second use.  First was 5 to 6 hours on jerky, made a nice addition of smoke flavor.  This time, it wouldn't stay lit.  I'm on a Traeger Texas, I think the fan blew out any remaining fire, but I tried several times and couldn't get it going, whereas the fully loaded 18 incher lit up first try for the jerky cook a few weeks ago.

So what's the solution for a two hour amazen tube smoker?

Fill it up, light it, wait the amount of time that you want smoke, take out of Traeger and take out unused pellets. ;) ;D
Quick and to the point cause I'm at work ;D

ok, I was hoping for more.  How am I supposed to stop a fully loaded tube after two hours?

a)  there's either a market for a 6 inch tube
b)  I'm totally missing how to use the 18 for just two hours.

feedback appreciated.

I think he makes the tubes in..6'',  9'',  12'' and 18''

But - I too want to hear how others use a large tube for only 2 hours...

i had a 12" and i would fill it up only 1/2 way then put the torch inside the tube to light the pellets.   i got the tray amazing smoker next.  i like it better.  each section of the tray will but for 2 1/2 - 3 hours.  i like the tray better because i can control the time better.

I have filled mine 1/2 way up then put my hand over the opening and turned the tube upside down. Then carefully set it on its side into the smoker. Light it and all is good.

Another method is to fill the tube half way with foil then add whatever amount of pellets you want.

Bingo, that was what I was about to suggest. Take a plug of foil and put it at the point you think a two hour smoke would be then fill the rest of the tube with pellets.

I ordered a 6" amaze'n smoker from Todd. It fits in everything I have. I can lay it anywhere in any of my grills or smoker. I saw the big ones at the gathering and just wasn't sure about them. Then I saw that Nepas had a small one. BINGO. He will make them if you ask..no problem. Great guy and great service..I had it within a week. Happy smoker here.  Pam  .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

I will admit when I read the title of this post "18 incher" I was a little reluctant to open it.

Cut my 18" in half. Todd sent me the end caps. Thanks Todd!
The 9" length gives me about the right amount of supplemental smoke I was looking for with my Traegers.
Before I would only fill it about 1/2 full.

Sounds to me like there's a market for a segmented tube.  Maybe a set of three connectable 6-inchers with two removable end caps so you could use as many as you need for a given smoke.  I'll be glad to test the prototype.

I'm not surprised that  Pam an Ohio State fan handles the 6 incher better.  Dee
