Does anyone know if the latest incarnation of the TBE still requires a Tommy ring?

To the best of my knowledge the newer TBE's have longer legs on the basket and lift your food higher in the cooking chamber and helps eliminate the so called "dead zone". The other main function of the Tommy Ring is to hold wood chips/pellets against the side wall to add a little smoke flavor to your cook.

I say yes, even though the legs are longer. I believe you still need it just to get you closer to the top and out of the dead zone

My TBE is brandy-new and the latest generation. Made in July 2011. I can measure the length of the new legs on the basket. How high should I raise the basket? How high is the dead zone?

First 3 inch's off the bottom seems to be the worse

Thanks Tommy! So I take it that all you need is a foil snake that runs around the perimeter at the bottom?

That willl work, but, a springform pan with the bottom taken out of it works the best. Get a 10" one and throw the bottom away. You can use this a lot..I have had mine for several years now. I just scrape it clean every once in a while. Pammie ★*˚°。°
