Rust

Hate to throw a wrench at any body's monkey, but my barrel has got severe rust problems all around the bottom rim. It is kept out side, but with a water proof cover on it. Living at sea level (plus 15 feet) is, definitely, not a mile high city, pun intended, so, how bout some advice, Corporate?  ??? Buy date on this PBC was last month.  ???

I can imagine that mild steel + salt air is a tough combination....coincidentally, I live in a "temperate rain forest" ( 70+ inches of rain per year ), and..have not seen any surface rust on my pit yet. Not as harsh as salt air with the temperatures/humidity combination you have....But - I do expect some. Any barrel I have seen that sits out awhile in these parts does have some surface rust on it.
Heck, my Yoder, and my Charbroil units have all had their wire brush and Rustoleum this year too! ;D

Confident that we will get a response from Noah and Amber!

OD don't clean it so good! All that gunk build up of grease in the bottom should make for a great rust inhibitor coating ;)

Seriously though living near sea level and covering it may allow extra moisture to build-up in the barrel. Maybe store a large bowl of uncooked rice in the bottom when your not using it to help keep things dry.

Rice in the barrel, ehh. That's a new one! Sounds like my salt shaker! I'm actually 1/4 mile from the water line, with umpteen trees and houses between me and the sea breeze. Had some rust spots on all my barrels, from Rocky Richmond's 18"er. to my nephew's 22 1/2", custom made. Never had it change color that fast before. Nice to know the Guardian Angel of Pit Barrelville is watching out for me!!  ;) :-*

Talked with Mr. Pit Barrel, himself, and new barrel on the way. Can't beat that kind of service!!  ;D

I'm a dealer for Green Mountain Grills and they pride themselves over their customer service, which is second to none. It seems like PBC is definitely, in the same league. Guess I can put away the spray paint can, now!  ;)

What gauge is the barrel made from?
If the rust recurs & it likely will, rather than Repaint try seasoning the bare metal areas with oil.
