Chicken Rub Taste Test
« Reply #-1 on: January 31, 2014, 12:37:47 AM »
I have a couple of different samples of rubs so I thought I would do a taste sample for dinner tonight and get my families opinion.  As you can see from the pictures I had 5 different samples.

#1 was Oakridge "Secret Weapon Pork and Chicken Rub"

#2 was Oakridge "Venison & Wild Game Rub"

#3 was Oakridge "Game Bird & Chicken Rub"

#4 was covered in Sriracha Sauce and then dusted with Mo-Rockin' Chicken

#5 was Tatonka Dust

...Drum roll please...

The top three, in no particular order, were #2, #4 and #5.  Each family member had their favorite.  As for me I can't get over how good Tatonka Dust is.  Then the combo of Sriracha and Mo-Rockin' and then the Oakridge Venison & Wild Game Rub was SUPER good!

#1 was just ok, kind of an all purpose taste and #3 was too much of a chili taste to it.

cool test.  I love #1 a lot myself.  I have some of the venison I haven't used yet.  I'm glad you liked it.  I will give it a try on some chicken.  what did you cook the chicken on and at what temp?

Great test! Tatonka and Mo Rockin are great rubs that I am like to use quite often.

All very good rubs. My neighbor uses all the Oakridge rubs and she is partial to the venison rub for her poultry and pork......

I cooked them on my GMG JB using Perfect Mix cooking pellets.  I cooked them at 300 until done.

While they all look good, you should know that they more than likely pale in comparison to Jan's Rub which was, as I recall, developed primarily for poultry.

Is this the one that you are referring to?

Jan's Rub
1  cup + 4 T sugar
1/4 cup Lawrey's Seasoning Salt
1/4 cup garlic salt
1/4 cup + 1 1/2 tsp celery salt
1/4 cup onion salt
1/2 cup paprika
2 T black pepper
1 T lemon pepper
2 tsp celery seeds
2 tsp ground dry sage
1 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp dry thyme
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

Mix all in larger bowl and store in cool place away from light in an air tight container or plastic bag.
