Title: Rutland Safe Lite Fire Starters
Post by: hikerman on April 29, 2016, 01:49:55 PM
For years I have used Weber fire starters. They work well and can be lit easily on a windy day. They are advertised as non-toxic, to me an important factor. But i've always had an issue with the chemically odor they have when lit, and the ash left is the same size as the cube was before being lit. Sometimes when the chimney is dumped into the grill, that ash cube falls in as well and harmful or not....it troubles me. So I have switched this season and am now using Rutland Safe Lite Fire Starters. They light easily, but not as well in the wind as Weber's product. They burn longer and cleaner. Are also non-toxic, but don't have a chemical smell.  They are simply recycled wood chips, paper and wax. They burn down to an indistinguishable ash. And the price is the kicker! Weber's starters are 24 @ $9.95 coming out to about .41 each. Rutland's starters are 144 @ $21.29 coming out to about .15 each!  A better product IMO, at a better price!  8)

Compressed cardboard with wax.  Great for starting lump charcoal.

How is the packaging? I keep my Weber starters in the charcoal holder in the performer. Which would be exposed to humidity and such

Pappy they come in a cardboard box. According to the box they can be lit when damp or wet. I have not tried this yet but i would think the wax/parafin is lightable when wet. Burn 8 - 10 minutes.

I used them for the first time in my patio fireplace.  Was impressed with how well they lit and worked to ignite the wood.

They should. Would probably only need to use half of one too. And my Uuni also.

You reading my mind Pappy? :P

I get my Weber cubes here: http://www.bar-b-que.com/firestarter-cubes-weber-case-of-12-24pk-7417/

I might incorporate the Rutland starters for my outdoor lighting as well as our wood stove.

Mine came today. Light easy and pretty much burn to nothing. Put a bunch in a ziplock bag so I can keep them outside in my performer

I had a chance to try one in my Cook-Air and it worked flawlessly. I probably could have used a half or quarter of a square. I will be buying them again.

They should work great for my Uuni also

I bought 2 boxes of 144 each on Amazon in Canada for only about 2 dollars more than the U.S. price and got free shipping. They only had 3 boxes and now I wish I had bought the last one too. I've used them 3 times and they work great. I really like that there is no chemical taste or smell. Highly recommend.
