Title: Smoke thermometer by Thermoworks review - Director's cut
Post by: abcbarbecue on October 11, 2016, 08:47:13 PM
A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Smoke thermometer by Thermoworks for a video review.  There is a short version of the review public on YouTube right now.  We had to make it short to satisfy our critics.  I like the short video but feel there was some important info left on the cutting room floor.  Exclusive to Let's Talk BBQ (at least for now) is a private "Director's Cut" of the video that is in its full length glory.  Enjoy!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LrWxv3KEJU

If you want to pre-order the Smoke you can do that here (http://www.thermoworks.com/Adrenaline-BBQ?tw=Adrenaline).  Please note my company get's a small affiliate fee if you use the link, so thank you if you do!  This does not add anything to the overall price.

BTW shipping appears to be only $3.99 so it's minimal.

If you do end up buying I strongly encourage you to bundle in a Pro-Series needle probe.  It's waterproof and reads in 2-4 seconds.  It basically turns your Smoke into a Thermopop!  For $16 it's a steal.

Alright I'm sold!  One question though 300' line of site range,  what about inside a building alot of us like to monitor in the house how diminished is the range when you are in a house and say upstairs on a second level?  Thats been my biggest issue with the I grill.

Just Askin :)

Nothing scientific but we walked around our homes with the Smoke receiver and it could handle three walls without losing connectivity.  It's much better than anything you'll get with bluetooth, which is what the iGrill uses.

Can't disagree.  I have an Ivation as well (same as Maverick) and it does the job.

For tailgating this is what I use for $12.00 If it walks so be it LOL. I don't smoke at tailgates I just grill so for the price this works great. I can go sample food/drinks at other grills & keep track of my grill.

I went three rooms away in my house & it worked great.....two regular walls & one glass wall. not perfect but it works well enough.

I do like this new unit. But I need to buy a boat LOL

Hey guys,
I'm the other guy in the video. I don't sell thermometers (I make videos) so I don't have any "skin in the game" but for what it's worth, I think this thermometer is going to take over in the next few years. It brings so much to the table (pun intended). I've got 2 thermapens and 2 Mavericks and I still plan on getting one.

I haven't been this excited about a thermometer in a really long time. It's not that it's magic or anything, it just does everything better than any other other leave-in thermometer I've used.

Also, I know Dave personally. He's a good guy (Former air force pilot, entrepreneur and dad).  You can feel good about doing business with him.

Just my two cents.

Great  review!!

Was looking to order a Maverick or the TW  ThermaQ  and got the email regarding the Smoke and ordered it  right on the spot.

Looks like its already been delayed  however.  Originally they stated it would ship  10/20 and now its back to the 28th... :(

I got mine over the weekend, can't wait to try it out!!  I

Pretty solid feeling,  gots some heft to it!!

I also got an extra probe.

Lots of parts  would be nice if they made a case available  like the  Chef Alarm to hold it all together.

100% Agree.  I'll mention that to them.

I really like the ChefAlarm case.  It'll hold the ChefAlarm, two probes, and a DOT (another Thermoworks thermometer) if you're careful with it.  That was my go to thermo combo before the Smoke came out.  I actually still use that combo, especially when I want to temp two different grills.

Thermoworks is currently offering Pro-Series probes for 20% off.  Makes the Smoke thermometer with needle probe (http://www.thermoworks.com/Smoke?tw=Adrenaline) deal look a few dollars better.

I have one of the new Smoke thermometers but have not used it yet.  I did take advantage of the 20% sale and bought the two probes that come with the Smoke so that I would have an extra set in case one of my original ones quit working.

I can't wait to try the smoke out.  I've been using a Maverick 732 which is a good thermometer but the Smoke is so much easier to set up.

Yeah Smoke is a significant upgrade.  While they are still on sale I recommend you grab a needle probe (http://www.thermoworks.com/TX-1002X-NP?adrenaline).  They read faster than the penetration probes and are so tiny it's very easy to check several spots in a hunk of meat without fearing you're turning it into Swiss cheese!

Thanks for the great video. I've owned a ThermoWorks ChefAlarm for over a year and recently purchased the ThermoPop. I love both products.

I was eyeballing the Smoke for while. I emailed my wife the link in the  review post. She asked if I wanted the Smoke or Samsung G2 smartwatch...without hesitation I said Smoke. Can't wait for Xmas to get here!

Thanks @GunSlinger!  Much appreciated.  You're going to love the Smoke thermometer.  Ask her to grab you a needle probe while she's at it and to buy this weekend using promo code SAVEMORE16 to get at least 10% off.

This may seem like a dumb question but..., I'm assuming if you don't care about the pit temp you could get another food probe and use that where the pit probe went? So you could monitor 2 pieces of meat instead.

Yes.  I have a setup where I use a ChefAlarm with the air temp probe for pit temps and my Smoke with two needle probes for meat temps.  Works really well.

Here is the Thermoworks combo (Smoke, ChefAlarm, 2 Needle Probes, 1 Air Pit probe) I'm talking about and pics of tonight's dinner that combo helped make:

Thanks! The grill is incidental.  It's the Slow 'N Sear (http://www.abcbarbecue.com/) that takes it to the next level.  OK it's more like the next three or 4 levels.  8)
