I cooked my second turkey yesterday on the rotessorie . I had a balancing problem like Ray did this time. I just couldn't get it balanced correctly and I think it was also a bit heavy for the stock motor.
The turkey just basically swung back and forth with the breast down the first hour and a half or so. After that I just turned off the motor and rotated it every few minutes by hand so the back side and thighs would catch up.
It turned out really good in the end so I'm still loving this thing.
Anyway, I ordered a new motor from One Grill ( the link Old Dave gave us). It claims to be able to turn up to 50lbs so it should do the trick.
I guess the stick unit is more for chicken and roast . Lighter weight and easier to balance.

That is some good info Terry! Thanks for keeping us updated about this. A lot of folks want to try a rotisserie. Your advice will help.

I haven't used mine since the Christmas roast but I know the issues with what i was having. User error. I didn't realize that the round piece is supposed to go in the U shape by the handle. I was putting it right up against the forks. I think it will work better the next time I use it. :-[

Haven't tried it yet but.. It in my future, Great Advice!

Which rotisserie do you have?
There are several other brands out there...any recommendations?

For the last 3 months I have been neck deep and almost drowning in a hardware and software upgrade here at work. There is finally some light at the end of the tunnel and this weekend I managed to stay home both days...
Since my last post on this I ordered an OnlyFire heavy duty motor because I got tired of watching my chickens swing back and forth. The stock motor is just too light for me.
I had to modify the mount just a bit as it was about 1/16th inch to wide for the motor mount. With that done easily I got it all back together and rolled the first bird.
Much better! this motor didn't even strain a little.
I also ordered a slow and sear a while back which I have been using and love. These together on the kettle is a winning combo for sure.
I had to train myself to back off on the smoke with the extension ring on. This is fine since it saves wood and charcoal, its just an adjustment. One or two chunks wood with Kingsford Hickory charcoal is plenty. Its more of an Aaron Franklin style than typical slow smoking. with the open holes for the spit I have found it better to use a little less charcoal and open the vent more so it can move on through .

Should I assume that the 4th picture explains how you got the turkey in the first place?
