Title: Pizza Lovers - Here's an inexpensive solution.
Post by: veryolddog on September 07, 2013, 08:03:29 PM
I was browsing around for pizza ovens. Here is a solution for $300.00 and runs on propane.

Looks interesting. I'm still holding out for wood, though.

I know what you mean. However, for $300.00, it is not a bad solution. As more and more people begin to explore pizza in the home, I think that the market will provide economical solutions that are fueled by wood.

Would rather spend the $89.99 more and get the Blackstone unit

That looks like a nice unit, Ed.  My son lives in an apartment, and a unit like that would work great for him.

I know how Pappy and David are thinking - the difference between a propane (or other heat sourced pizza oven) and a wood fired oven is like the difference between a gas fireplace and one that uses real logs.  There is something so special about wood fired ovens that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.  It is kind of like standing in front of a bonfire - you smell the smoke, feel the intense heat, and can control both with judicious use of your wood.  In our last pizza party, we had the guests try their hand at firing their own pizzas - talk about a great gathering place for socializing.

For anyone that has room in their outdoor space, a wood fired oven is something that you'd enjoy for decades, be the source of yet unimagined pleasure, and the fact that that it would greatly increase the resale value of your home doesn't hurt  ;D

That IS a nice little unit ED... It gives me some ideas (even though the wife says I don't need anymore bright ideas  :-\ )  I told her I'd stop looking at grilling toys when her new shoes stop showing up at the front door... I'm sure I am safe for another 5 years or so.  ;D
I'm also really intrigued by that blackstone unit at Amazon...(Thanks Muebe)  I like the revolving tray and the nice height of the unit.  I would have to find one that is/or can be converted to Natural Gas though..... my deck has three Natural Gas ports.

Like some of the folks, my patio is just so big and I already have a pellet smoker, wood smoker and a Weber Kettle located there along with a table and four chairs. You'd be surprised how fast the space gets use up. I really wanted to see if I could make pizza on the Weber rather than add another unit. The KettlePizza attachment sounds good but it will cook the bottom and not the top because the Weber Lid is too high. However, I have an idea for the Weber which requires a home made mod, that will lift the grill of the Weber and the deployment of a heat diffuser. The dome of the Weber is a problem to be solved because that dome is too high and traps the heat. While the bottom of the pizza can cook in five to seven minutes, you need the top of the pizza to cook as well. That is the flaw of the Kettlepizza product.

Well, this fun. That's all I can say.

Ed, your comments re: the Kettle Pizza tool for the Weber are right on. This is why I have gone back to much simpler pizzas and precooking the crust on the grill - cook the first side, flip and oil - add the ingredients (very simple) and put the lid on to cook the toppings. No "garbage pizzas" with this method - but I can make some very nice simple / rustic pizzas.

It's funny.  As much as I love to cook, and as much as I love pizza I can't get into homemade pizza.  There is just something about pizza (and fast food) that makes me want someone else to do it for me.  :P

I caught this on YouTube. It looks like Weber is introducing a new pizza oven ring in the near future. It already has been released in Europe and it seems to have strong possibilities. They have reduced the lid size with this feature that deploys on top of the grate. It makes sense. If it is in $150 range, it will be a big seller. I am interested and hoping that the USA release will happen soon. It would make a good Christmas present.

I am looking at the Camp Chef Artisan Pizza Oven sice it goes on top of the Camp Chef stove that sits on my deck year round. The Camp Chef stove is the most versatile cooking appliance I own.
