Title: Simple steak dinner
Post by: drholly on September 27, 2013, 10:31:18 PM
I'm still getting my sea legs back - trying to get back to cooking after a week in the hospital. The girls are at football games tonight (homecoming for their school and my oldest's BF's school.)

I went to the local grocer and found a tri tip - yep a tri tip. I also found a package labeled tri tip steaks (3 of them.) So, I bought both. I decided to make one of the steaks tonight and the tri tip tomorrow night. Also picked up some small red taters to make some smashed taters. And some corn/ pepper salad and cucumber onion salad.

Started the taters first on the back of the grill grates. Rubbed the steak with some grape oil and W.O.W. dust. When the were ready to be smashed, I put the steak on the grates and let it go. Flipped the steak and checked the taters. Brought them to the table together along with the salads. Just right. A little butter on the steak with some parsley - perfect.

No wine on hand - a nice cold glass of milk did well!

Cheers!

Simple but elegant; the steak is cooked perfectly.  I love red potatoes, smashed - great job, David!

Great looking meal David. It's apparent that during your stint in sickbay they didn't take the cook out of you!  :D
Tell me, how was the steak? In your opinion, is it worth cutting a tri tip roast into steaks or better to leave whole?

Thanks everyone. It is good to be back amongst the living.

Gene, I still haven't had a tri-tip roast. The one I found last night will be the first - hopefully done tonight on the PBC. I do have to say that the steak was excellent. Very tender and flavorful. Still prefer a rib eye, but this would be a strong second in my mind. I cooked to just a little less than medium rare. The W.O.W. dust was just right on this steak.
