That brings back memories. I used to like scotch too well, while in Alaska, USAF, 1967-68 I was drinking JD green label sour mash and coke, always got hung over when overdone! A friend said drink scotch and you will not have a hangover. It took a few times but got to love it. I usually drank JW red label and he was right you didn't get hungover; you just got high again after drinking some water! ::) About every Fri. night 4 of us sat down to playing double deck pinochle after supper. We each had a fifth of our favorite. I had the scotch with ice and a little water. When the booze was gone we went to the NCO club to finish the night! During the winter months it was usually a repeat on Sat. night and then hit the NCO club Sun. morning for sick call. They had free salty dogs, either vodka or gin mixed with grapefruit juice in a large punch bowl and salt to coat the glass with. I got off the scotch when I came back home.

I stay pretty much with beer but buy some bourbon around the holidays every year. I bought a fifth of Elijah Craig 12 yr. old small batch bourbon 97 proof this year. I like to sip a shot with a beer.

I had to look up your JW Blue, looks like it is about their top of the line. I think I need to try some if the local liquor store has any! Don

Sounds like you have a great time back in the days, Don!  Just the kind of memories I like to relive.  I'm relatively new to Scotch - only for the past two years or so, but I'm definitely developing my favorite appellations - Speyside in the Highlands area for the sweet, mellow, smooth, and Islay for the peaty styles.

The blue label is very good to me because it encompasses what appears to be all the Scottish appellations in a single whiskey.

I've never been a great fan of Johnny Walker Blue but not because it doesn't taste good.  It's a nice blend but I just don't think it merits the price tag (at least $140 for 750 ml). There are just too many blends and single malts that taste as good or better to me and are better values.

As you work your way through the Speysides, try Abelour A'bunadh.  For my money (usually about $55-60) it's the best under $100 bottle on the market.  It's a recreation of an old recipe (from the late 1800s) and since it's aged in sherry casks, is somewhat sweeter and softer than most scotches.  At cask strength (about 120 proof) it can kick your a$$ if you're not careful. Try it with a splash, a cube, or straight - it's almost like three different whiskies.

OBTW, American and Irish products usually use the "whiskey" spelling (but not always) while Scotch whisky is pretty much always spelled without the "e."

Ah, memories.  Scotch was my drink of choice before I quit.  My regular drink was Dewar's White Label, my mid grade was Glenfiddich 12, and my top shelf was Glenlivet 18.  Anything more expensive than that was out of my price range.  I have had JWB and enjoyed it, but I agree that it is overpriced.  Given the choice between it and either of the singles I mentioned, I will take the others even if I am not paying.

Have you tried the stainless steel ice cubes? I want some for wine. What do you think? I freeze my whiskey and Vodka..well not freeze but I keep them in the freezer.  Pam .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི

While on a trip to Edinborough, Scoland my wife and I took the "Scotch Experience" tour.  Learned all about the four regions that produce the different "flavors" of scotch.  Got to taste them all, too.  Each one was very distinctive.  All good, too.

My mom and I did something similar a couple of years back in Edinborough-- was just fascinating to get to taste the different styles all next to each other and have the differences explained in that kind of hands on experience.  Ardbeg was both our favorite, although the price tag keeps me from indulging my newly refined tastes!   :'(

One of my favorite drinks (especially great in the winter) is/was scotch and milk (with a little bit of honey).

Thanks for the recommendation.  I don't recall seeing it at our local establishment, but will definitely ask if they can get it.

I agree about JWB being over priced.  Typically, my developing Scotch habit is much more cost effective than my affection for wine even at $60 a bottle.  Considering that a good wine will often bear a similar price tag, and is consumed in one evening - the bottle of spirit lasts quite a bit longer.

Yes the Glenfiddich 12 year is not bad. I had some last night. 15 year steps it up. Get some 18 year and now were talking!  :P

The Macallan 18 is a favorite of mine

I prefer the single malt---Glenfiddich 12 is the usual, but the 15 or 18 is a treat.

My "standard, around-the-house whisky" is The Glenlivet 12 but I usually have at least a blend or two and a few single malts in the liquor cabinet.  Just looked to see what I've got on hand and found it to be fairly typical - Dewars, JW Black, The Glenlivet 12, Abelour A'bunadh, Edradour 10, Lagavulin and Macallan Select Oak. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by for a wee dram or three.

You guys are driving me nuts with all this scotch talk!  Yes, JW Blue is very smooth, but it better be for the price--not quite that high here--about $80.00/750ml, but usually only available over the holidays.    Regular "daily" fare is JW Red, occasionally The Glenlivet 12, 15, or 18.   I consume too much to be able to afford too many single malts.   Dewars White Label a favorite for years, but like the "peatier" flavor of JW Red.  Stalled enough it's getting closer to five o'clock!   Off to "hit the bottle!"

Hmmm, let's see...

Option 1 (stay home):
     Macallan 18 (750 ML)...............................about $160

Option 2 (visit CDN Smoker):
Airfare, from just about anywhere to Winnepeg...............about $800
     Dogsled rental...................................................................about $600
     Survival gear.....................................................................about $1500
     Lots of clothes..................................................................about $900
The look on his face when you knock on the door............PRICELESS!

I'd go but it's too far away from my ocean (and SWMBO has already spent our discretionary income for the next several years). Therefore I'll defer to someone more solvent. Probably tee would be best suited (so to speak).  I can almost see him in his Oklahoma shorts shouting "Gig 'em, Aggies!" as the dogs screech to a halt in front of CDN Smoker's igloo (or whatever those Manitobanites live in).

I'm rather early on with respect to drinking scotch, but I've already established a rather nice selection to enjoy on a cold winter's night

For the 12 year olds
Aberlour
Glenfiddich
JW Black

15 year old
Glenlivet

18 year old
Laphroig

For a blend, my brother-in-law has me drinking Famous Grouse

If you can find Cragganmore 12 yr. it is an interesting, and different single malt. Very peaty, smoky and with a hint of seaweed and salt. But not so much that it is undesirable. In a double, I add about 1-tsp of water, and it makes the finish of this scotch roll out to a velvety caramel. Worth the try ;).

Mr. Honu,

Let me see if I can save you some cash.

I could send someone to get you in a sled,

But I think you might like this sled better,

I think you are right, better chance of me coming to visit you first ;D

Do you remember back in the 60's when everybody smoked?  Stinky, dark lounges?  Ashes and butts all over the table?

Do you recall how the waitress used to carefully collect all the butts and ashes in another tray on her cart?

Those butts were just raw material!

Back in the back of the bar they had a barrel of cheap vodka.  They'd dump all the butts and ashes they collected into the barrel each evening.  And . . . a day or so later . . . they'd have Scotch!
