Title: Great value bourbon...
Post by: pz on January 03, 2014, 10:12:04 PM
... WL Weller Special Reserve 7 year and Old Weller Antique 107 Proof - Buffalo Trace distillery.  As is likely with most whiskey aficionados, we are ever in the quest for excellent spirit at an excellent price.  On a tip I obtained on another forum, we tried the WL Weller Special Reserve 7 tonight, and it is stellar.  It is a budget bourbon typically found for $10-$16, but in my humble opinion, is one of the best bourbons I have sipped in a while.  This distillery is the same that produces Pappy Van Winkles.

My wife surprised me by coming home with all the local liquor store had in it's inventory - what a great gal I have

I will look for that but with the Alabama liquor stores being controlled by the state, we don't get a lot of the brands other states do. What size bottle is that price? Seems like a real low price, but again all liquor is high here.

We're State run only as well, which limits our selection as well. The bottle is a regular 750, which makes this the best bang for my buck that I have encountered in a long time.

I have to drive into TN or SC to get any real selection beyond the obvious handful of large market brands. NC is an ABC state as well ( State run Alcoholic Beverage Commission stores only) the the prices are crazy expensive as well as limited choices.

Out here there is a liquor store every 30ft!

And each bottle gets a lovely small paper bag to wrap tightly around for concealed public drinking :P

I don't know how you guys drink bourbon, to me it smells like turpentine. Dated a girl in the states that drank bourbon and after a couple of drinks I couldn't kiss her as the smell just gross me out. Needless to say she never became one of the family.  ;D ;D ;D

Well there is bourbon, then there is whiskey and whisky. I would kiss any woman and lick the lips of a woman who was drinking any of them. There is a reason they call it the "water of life".

I never tried WL Weller, but I prefer wheated bourbons (Makers Mark) over the rye bourbons.  I must try to find WL Weller and add it to my bar.  Is it similar to Makers?

In my opinion, quite.  Both are classic bourbons.  Weller is also bottled as Rebel Yell in some regions.

Got a bottle of WL - it reminds me more of Wild Turkey then Makers Mark.  Still not a bad Bourbon.
