Kettleman Rib Eyes
« Reply #-1 on: August 22, 2015, 10:44:50 AM »
A couple weeks back we at Wal-Mart and they have the Char-Broil Kettleman on display. Of course The Smoke's eyes roll back in his head and he starts drooling. Wendy drags me away and lo and behold I end up back at the display. After a small embarrassing tantrum,I am allowed to get one. I Love Wendy :-* :-*

But alas, they have none in stock :'(

How about 20 bucks off for the floor model ::)

You got it  :)

But wait the thermometer is missing  :'(

How about another 20 bucks off  ::)

In the cart..89 dollar...no hollar  :) :)

I am not going to do a review, The Holly has had a top secret prototype for a while and I do not want to steal his thunder

The main reason for my tantrum was the ash pan locks tightly in place under the kettle......I have had too many instances of hot embers dropping out of my PK Grill...up here in the mountains that can be a disaster. In 2003 some idiot tossed a flare at a house and there was a major fire.....he is still in prison......the lid latches in place so I can lock it tight.....in case a big gust comes up the grill will stay sealed and the hot embers stay in the grill.......

So we get it fired up and I notice the thermo is only 350 degrees, Char-Broil CS informs me that the cooking grate design (like the SRG) is designed to hold the heat at grate level (we are talking infra-red here)  :)

Anyhows, as good as a Weber??    The quality seems to be there. You can order any component from CB. First impressions....you be the judge ;)

You can put wood chips right on the grate to smoke and grill at the same time

Steak perfection my friends

I can't believe Wendy.  I'd slap yourr butt real hard and put your @ss in the cart and wheeled you right out of the store.  Your spoiled.  Lol......

it's not even close to weber quality.

Sorry, I got to go to work and I'm grouchy.

The kettle body is on par with the Weber. Both appear to be 16 gauge Porcelain coating. The legs are set wider for more stability. Lets face it Spark, Weber legs have always been the weak part of the Weber. Charbroil has addressed this. The ash pan is porcelain coated, lay down foil and this will last forever. Time will tell however. The Weber has been around since 1952...The Kettleman..2014??  ;)

Not sure if it will hold up as long as the Weber - but my prototype is still going strong. I didn't think I'd like the grate - hard to add charcoal if needed or see how the coals are doing. But over time, I found it did quite well, I didn't need to add charcoal very often (maybe only once or twice - very efficient, and I don't use it for smoking or long cooks), and the grate, like on the SRG, does a wonderful job for searing! Added benefit - never drop veggies into the fire!

Mine doesn't have a thermometer, but never pay attention to those on the grill anyway. Besides I have my British Racing Green Thermapen and the Lollipop.

It gets used every week at least once or twice - summer through winter. It is my 17 year old daughter's "go-to" grill - she loves it, once she learned to make a 2 zone fire and do a reverse sear.

Like I said - not trying to compare it to a Weber, but compared to some Char-Broil products - this is solid!

There are so many Weber Kettle clones out there, it is not hard to compare.....however, this kettle is very well thought out and is much different than other clones.

You are so right D-Holly, Char-Broil brought their A-game on this Kettleman  8)

One last note - both of my daughters play softball, one is in gymnastics, the other basketball... so dinners are often very late. That means, I am in bed before the grill cools down enough to be covered and suffers the weather... after all this time - rain and snow, it has shown no ill effects. If I knew this and saw one on the retail floor (especially at The Smoke's price), I would buy it - it has all the elements of an excellent value.
