Thanks for the calls of concern I got from some folks here. It meant a lot.
Well, we got hit hard with the ice in Augusta and the section I live in got it the hardest since we have more large, older trees than any other section of the city. We have a yard full of down trees with two big and numerous small limbs on the roof. Don't think there is any major damage. Lost the canvas canopy on my cookers as it collapsed from the ice. No damage to any of my cookers. The insurance adjuster will be here Tuesday. She's coming up from South Georgia since the ones locally are swamped.
We were without power until 8:30 last night which was about two and a half days. There are some still out and SC will have some folks out until next week. There are over 2500 power crews here from around the country helping the GA Power and other companies. I tell you these are some hard working folks and I think there is a pride in that community of being able to go all over the country and help other crews during a disaster. It was interesting that when Sandy hit the NE power crews from the South were turned away in NJ because they were non-union.
The Stil saw shop sold 100 chain saws and 50 generators in a half an hour. Got in another 100 and they were gone in an hour. Lowe's had sold every chainsaw, generator, flashlight, lantern, and small bottle of propane they had. Wal-Mart shelves of that type of equipment were bare. I assume every other retailer was the same.
Some restuarants had power and were swamped with folks eating and keeping warm.
My sympathies are really for those folks up north where it is so cold when they lose power. It must be so terrible.
I'm putting together an emergency preparedness kit with some food, propane stove, candles, lanterns, working chain saw, old time coffee pot that doesn't take electricity and other things that come to mind. I'll look into a generator for the house. That maybe too expensive. Y'all may want to look at something similar in your area. Of course, as much of my advice here goes all but three or four have already done what I was talking about.
Well, that's about it. I'll be involved in cleaning up for the next few days.
Thanks for the concern.
Dee
We were fortunate to have hot and cold water as well as my grills. W
