Hugh Hefner? Bruce Jenner?....Capt' Kangaroo....??? The supense is killin' me! ;D Actually - it sounds like Elizabethan era prose....Chaucer? Lord Byron? Which means it is probably Red Skelton....... :D

Farther back than that - found in Old English references (c. 1000 AD), may have biblical origins. Or not.

For some reason, I remember this quote from a Texaco commercial back in the early 60's, don't know why, well today, after several good guesses had to google it myself, attributed to an English dude named John Heywood in an 1867 book called The Proverbs and Epigrams of John Heywood, guess I learned something.

Look a little deeper. Heywood was not the originator; he just included it (and many others) in his anthology.

Possibly even before him... but probably not much since he retired about 1,600 years ago.

Dee the Turtle is not that old. The students did have tablets in his class when he was in tenth grade. So what if they were stone tablets. Still very advanced for that time.
