Title: 8qt Dutch Oven in a CharBroil SRG Big Easy
Post by: CaptJack on October 08, 2014, 01:46:14 PM
8qt (12"x 5") Dutch Oven in a CharBroil SRG Big Easy

I have a cast iron 8qt Dutch oven (not for charcoal)
it doesnt have legs or a flat, lipped lid
I normally use it in the oven or on the stove top
BUT!
you can also put it in an SRG
I set it on the 10"x 3" ring from a SpringForm pan (Tommy Ring)
to raise it out of the 'dead zone' at the bottom of the SRG
on Low, the bottom of the chamber runs around 385°

how about 3 - 8qt cast iron Dutch Ovens - with legs and flat lids (charcoal model) - stacked in the SRG
you could do a three 8qt DutchOven cook all at the same time without charcoal
totally portable
and you can adjust the temperature ;)

Great idea, wonder how it would work in a BEESR?  ;)

Great idea, wonder how it would work in a BEESR?  ;)

heat is heat
the BEESR is smaller in diameter than the SRG
so it may only work with the 10" DutchOvens?
you should be able to stack at least two, maybe three?

the advantage of the "charcoal models" are the 3 legs on the bottom
which normally gives you space for the charcoal briquets
but in the BigEasy gives you air space from the bottom in the infrared chamber
and with the flat lipped charcoal lids
it gives you a flat surface to stack the next DutchOven on top
make sure the bale handles are just wire with no spring handles
the spring handles will make a problem with space in the chamber

..but, if all you have are the non-charcoal models
you can use the rings from SpringForm pans as spacers between the DutchOvens

Thanks again for the additional tips.   ;)

I was looking at the "charcoal models" last time I was in BPS, all of mine are "stovetop models".  They carry Lodge at BPS and IIRC, most if not all of them in the store had bale handles without the wire.

My mistake I meant to say without the spring handles, I knew what you meant.  ;)

All my DO's are too big for the BEESR, my smallest is a Lodge 5qt, I just tried putting in in the BEESR and it don't fit.  Looks like another shopping spree at BPS coming soon.  ;D
