The importance of an occupation after retirement
« Reply #-1 on: February 01, 2015, 05:53:30 AM »
As we get older we sometimes begin to doubt our ability to "make a difference" in the world.  It is at these times that our hopes are boosted by the remarkable achievements of other "seniors" who have found the courage to take on challenges that would make many of us wither.

Harold Schlumberg is such a person.  This is quoted from Harold: "I've often been asked, 'What do you do now that you're retired?' Well I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background and one of the things I enjoy most is converting beer, wine and whiskey into urine. It's rewarding, uplifting, satisfying and fulfilling. I do it every day and I really enjoy it."

Harold is an inspiration to us all.

The real answer is brewing your own ale THEN turning to body fluid.

My other inspiration for working after retirement is that my significant other still thinks I am at CITIGROUP rather than on fixed income...

Reminds me of the story of an airline pilot that retired and didn't let his wife know that he retired.  So every week he'd pack his bags, put on his uniform, and left town for a few days, following the days on days off schedule as he did while he was working.  Everything was going great until one day there was a death in the family and his wife called crew scheduling at his home base to have them get in touch with her husband on his layover and inform him of the news and arrange for his immediate return home.  They informed her that there was no way they could get in touch with him because he retired years ago.   There was a second death in the same family upon his return home.

Early in my teaching career I recall telling my students that I didn't really know what I wanted to be when I grew up.  As I got closer to the time to pull the plug, I changed my tune.  I decided that what I wanted to be when I grew up was RETIRED!!  I had too many hobbies and not enough time to do them.  Now, I still have too many hobbies (I have even added a few more) and I can't decide which one to do next.  I love having choices.  Some days I choose to not do a thing.  It's good to be retired!!  I think I'll go recycle some beer.
