Modified smoker box on the SRG, Thanks Tommy!
« Reply #-1 on: November 29, 2015, 08:52:49 PM »

Modified the smoker box on the SRG by drilling more holes as was advised by "Tommy" who moderates this post.  It did increase smoke within the SRG.  Thanks again to. Let Talk BBQ for all the useful info

really a bit let down on the height of the the smoke outlet in the cooking chamber,  needs to be routed lower IMO.  have to drill those holes in mine, still trying to tweak my SRG ...with pellets it smokes like a boss....just it's above the meat, unless your grilling.

reason I use the Tommy Ring    Its on the bottom of the chamber so the meat gets all the smoke going up.

Is it easy to add wood to the Tommy ring after the smoke goes out?

Yes I think it is but you have to pull the basket of food up enough to get to the ring

Did y'all drill holes in the cooking cylinder too?

Also, as far as the smoke height, wouldn't the air circulating in the SRG move the smoke enough around the food?

I finally have my SRG seasoned and plan on using it this weekend.  Wish me luck.  I'm starting easy with leg quarters.

I'm late getting in here but I think Tommy was right way back when he closed off the side vents and added the stack. Even a round vent like come on a Weber kettle on top is better than those huge side vents. Plus you gain control of smoke.

I agree, have looked at adding Weber type vent to the top, gotta be careful not to get too big of one since cover doesn't really have that big of a flat spot to install. Also thinking of using high temp gasket material used on some wood stoves to serve as a backer rod on the vent slots topped off with high temp caulk. I'll continue to research gotta make sure that gasket and caulk can handle high temps of the SRG. Any suggestions would be helpful, it will be a spring project anyway plenty of time.  :)

All I did was cut a 4 in hole in the top and add a lid that's swings for adjusting

I saw that post.  But with the extra holes in the smoker box, did you add more holes to the cylinder?

Thanks!  Happy New Year!
