$1 Super Smoke Mod
« Reply #-1 on: May 17, 2014, 07:21:02 PM »
I posted a thread on how to get smoke on low, and Tommy gave me some good ideas. I thought about buying an Amaze n Tube smoker, but those things are too expensive. I went to Dollar Tree and bought a mire mesh drawer organizer, like this:

Filled it with wood pellets, got it started up with a propane torch and set it on top of my Tommy Ring.

This is from my test run. The Big Easy isn't even turned on.

Just a caution: Not sure if this metal is galvanized or not, so you should run your torch over it real good to cook off any chemicals that might be on it before you start cooking food around it.

It works fine. Like I said, I cooked it with the blow torch really good and burned off anything that was on the metal.

Fire can remove paint, glues and other stuff...But - I wonder if heat continues to also liberate lead, or other heavy metals?

Products not designed for use in a food prep/cook environment have no enforcement of standards - or interest in being "food safe"....

Not saying that the use of this office product is a bad idea....but I can't say that it is a good one either. It would not be responsible of me to do so - wouldn't it? ;)

Let's just say "be careful" when it comes to using products not intended for food prep/cook purposes. After all - it is a personal judgement  and freedom of choice. But we do have a responsibility to each other for sound advice. Not always initially cheaper - but, the priority is safety - not saving a buck. ( Tho it hurts me personally to admit that! ;) :D)

Having spent most of this year in the hospital with an un-diagnosable "problem" I have to agree with T. No, I didn't (to my recollection) use some strange product or device, but it does make me wonder about all the things we come in contact with and never think about. I can't change them, but I can be more careful about what I choose to use. Not saying this is bad - I don't know. Just saying I am going to be more careful than I was in the past.

I wouldn't begin to guess what metal that one might be made of but I will say this, when looking for solutions do not ever use a galvanized metal with any heat source it let's off a very toxic and noxious gas when heated.
