Title: Have You Had Your Heme Today?

JUST THINKIN' . . . "PLASTIC BURGERS SUCK"

(extracted <pun intended> from an article about false fast food written by a major TV network)

"The patty itself is made from Impossible Foods' signature burger blend which includes soy protein, potato protein, coconut oil, sunflower oil, salt, yeast and a variety of emulsifying agents. The key, not-so-secret ingredient is heme*, an iron-rich molecule that gives Impossible burgers a meaty taste.

A traditional Whopper has 660 calories, 40 grams of fat (12 of which are saturated) and 28 grams of protein. The Impossible Whopper clocks in at 630 calories, 34 grams of fat (11 saturated) and 25 grams of protein, so it's pretty similar from a macro nutritional standpoint. However, the Impossible Whopper has 58 grams of carbs to the traditional Whopper's 49. It also has more sodium."

*Heme or haem is a coordination complex "consisting of an iron ion coordinated to a porphyrin acting as a tetradentate ligand, and to one or two axial ligands." The definition is loose, and many depictions omit the axial ligands."

Ah, nutritional nirvana or as the song says, "a heart attack in a sack" without having to kill a cow.  Every now and then, I go off my relatively healthy regimen and eat a cheeseburger (offset with a Diet Coke).  When I do I am going to choose the cow over the heme.  End of editorial.  The source (me) is biased toward good food.

(Note:  I'm kind of old fashioned -- went through my drawer of barbecue spices and discovered I don't have any porphryin or tetradentate ligand.  Maybe this is hampering my contest efforts?  I also posted this on Facebook today)

This baffles me a tad. All of this effort to make non-meat taste like meat. Why don't they just eat meat?? ::)

Don't much care what "those people" eat but they shouldn't call it a "burger" if it ain't made of ground cow. I'd probably not choose to eat something called a "vegetable patty" or "tofu fritter" but at least they come by their names relatively honestly.

Of course if you agree with that sentiment, you're probably almost ready to be one of those guys who won't call it "chili" if it has beans and/or (more than a smidgen) of tomatoes.

Postscript for TMB and whoever else didn't see that one coming... Gotcha!

Simply amazing, Hub, that in order to make the "healthy alternative" palatable, they have it as "bad" for you as the original . . . . . . . and then jack up the price ! ! !

And, Turtle, you're right.  They should have no more to right to call the Frankenstein monstrosity a burger, as I have the right to stick a sprig of rosemary in the end of an Oscar Meyer wiener and call a meat carrot.
